The Academy Theatre, established in 1956 in Atlanta, Georgia, stands as the longest-running professional theatre in the state and a vital cultural fixture for the Atlanta metropolitan community. It operates based on a unique ensemble system where artists work closely over time to produce cohesive and thought-provoking theatrical works. The Academy's mission emphasizes providing space for artistic exploration, educational outreach across all ages, and making professional performing and visual arts accessible and affordable for families and all community members. This theater is super cool! It's in a pretty cute little neighborhood and has such a nice, nostalgic feel to it both inside and out. They play a lot of retro movies and show different ones every week. The showing rooms are small and a little bit dingy, but cozy. With the old movies, they show old trailers as well which can be a lot of fun. Prices are fair and affordable for both the movies and the snacks, and they also offer pizza and sushi as concessions. My partner and I went here for date night to see Airplane! and we are definitely planning on coming back to check out more retro films here. We had a lot of fun and it's very respectable what this place does.

I love this theatre but won't be going this summer because they've stopped showing the Repertory Series (old movies). Also the pizza got more expensive, which is a bummer. I appreciate that this is our neighborhood theatre and I've been coming here for a long time but these new changes feel like they're not in the best interest of the community.

Friendly staff. Nostalgia setting. Pizza & beer served. Only 1 option for matinee usually at 1pm: $6.50. 3pm & later it's $9.50

We waited in line 40 minutes to pay for our tickets and concessions while other movie goes told their kids to go grab a seat. I heard these parents buy tickets only for themselves, and no one was checking tickets. When we finally bought our tickets we were able to go find the last two seats together I the second row. I'm not sure if it's free to enter but on Sunday following the rules made me never want to go back.

A neighborhood mainstay - the Academy has evolved to become our go to movie theater for first run movies. They also have a revival series that highlights all the genres and movies you remember (and some you don't!). You can order tickets ahead online (which we did recently for Nosferatu on its second night) or at the concessions counter when you come in. They have slices from Flying Pie Pizza and sushi from Miyamoto; and a great selection of mostly local brews on tap. There's always an interesting exhibit by a local artist in the lobby too!

This includes widely popular recent releases, acclaimed indie films, and family-friendly movies suitable for all ages. The theater also programs “classic” repertory films that appeal to cinephiles who appreciate timeless storytelling and vintage cinema aesthetics. The diverse menu accommodates dietary preferences and enhances the overall enjoyment, whether it’s a casual gathering of friends or a family outing. The relaxed atmosphere created by these concessions is perfect for groups who like to chat and share tastes, making the theater a mini-event space rather than just a place to watch a movie.
