Amazing staff and volunteers. The best thing to do is submit your info online with a few dogs in mind. They are incredibly helpful to ensure your new loved one is a great match with support post adoptions: we went once just to meet and observe: we didn’t match with anyone that visiting but went back to try again and we met Reyna! Follow your intuitive sense with animals. If things do not work out you can support the center by volunteering or making donations or supplies. Me and my partner recently went to Austin Animal Center looking for another dog to keep our current dog company. The staff was amazing and we came in close to closing time but we were still able to meet the dog we were interested in! Next day we brought our dog to meet him, which went amazing, and that same day he went home with us! After walking through the facility and getting a list of dogs we were interested in, the staff gave us all the info on each pet to help us figure out who would be best with our dog at home. So happy we found Ranger Rick, who is now renamed Asteroid ☄️ Thank you Austin Animal Center for making sure these pets go to a loving, fit home!

We went in Sunday, after we had been to 5 or 6 other shelters in the area. The place was so well maintained and staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. The nice lady in the cat Sanctuary (I know her name starts with an A) suggested Siren and she is the most playful friendly cat. She does so great with our yorkie poo(who is a bit of a jerk sometimes). Thank you! To the whole animal shelter team. They will be getting all our future animal donations.

The shelter hid medical information. Our puppy showed clear signs within hours of nerve damage. She had no control of her bowels or tail which were stated at the shelter that she was scared and is currently struggling with diarrhea. Our vet stated the nerve damage should have been caught on intake or even regular interaction. AAC who had her for a month shared no information on the condition. Now we are stuck with the medical costs and likely will have to rehome our sweet girl as we cannot continue with expenses and cleanup. Had this been told to us we could have rescued a different dog but we will never adopt from here again.

I used to think highly of Austin Animal Center, but my recent experience left me incredibly disappointed and disheartened. I was in the process of adopting a dog with heartworms—a condition I fully understood and was committed to treating. But after an unforeseen and urgent relocation out of Texas, I made the responsible decision to cancel the adoption. I couldn’t travel back and forth from Colorado (13 hours away), and unfortunately, the area I’m moving to doesn’t have access to the kind of treatment she would need. Continuing the adoption wouldn’t have been fair to her. What truly shocked me, though, was showing up at the center four days after canceling—still waiting to speak to someone because no one had reached out—and discovering a message thread where staff were speaking negatively about me. They were making assumptions, had no idea about my situation, and yet chose to gossip rather than act professionally. It was hurtful, especially considering I had already paid the adoption fee. To make matters worse, I found out that the dog had already been adopted by someone else, without any notice or communication from the center. I was left completely in the dark. Rescue and adoption work should be rooted in compassion—for both the animals and the people trying to do right by them. Instead, I felt dismissed, judged, and ultimately disrespected. Based on this experience, I can no longer recommend Austin Animal Center.
