I joined Carefree Boat Club in Seattle with high hopes, and I’ll admit: when you actually get out on the water, it’s a great experience. Boating around Puget Sound and SLU/Lake Washington is unbeatable. But unfortunately, the good moments are few and far between — and the overall experience left me seriously disappointed. Weekend reservations are extremely hard to come by, which is when most people actually want to use the boats. You're also completely at the mercy of the club’s interpretation of weather conditions. They frequently cancel boating due to “Puget Sound Small Craft Advisory” warnings — even when the weather is perfectly clear and calm. While I understand the policy is rooted in safety, it’s applied very conservatively, and it means canceled plans with no say in the matter. The biggest issue, however, is the contract. If your situation changes or you’re unhappy with the service, you're stuck. The 90-day written cancellation policy is strictly enforced, with no flexibility. Despite not using the service in months, I was denied a release and forced to continue paying. You're also not allowed to leave honest reviews without risking conflict — but I think it's important that future customers know what to expect. In theory, a boat club seems like a smart, cost-effective way to enjoy boating in Seattle. In reality, the lack of control, limited access, and rigid policies make this a poor value. If you're looking for freedom and flexibility on the water — this is 100% not it.

I highly recommend Carefree Boat Club. In the past 10 months I've enjoyed enjoyed over 30 outings, taking boats out of Fisherman's Terminal, Shilshole, Tacoma and Bellingham, as well as exercising reciprocal boating in two Southern California locations. In every location, the boats are always clean and ready to go when I get there, and the dock staff is super helpful and friendly with anything and everything we might need for a great day on the water! They continually survey members to find out what would be in the best interest in the club and also add more boats as the club continues to grow. Not only do we take their wide variety of boats out all around seattle but we’ve also taken them out in California and Florida as they are part of a larger network of clubs. One of the best decisions I made and never regretted it!
