I took ASA 101 this week, in the wed/thurs group class with Graham. It was amazing! He was so patient and worked all of the lingo into our chats like butter! He made sure each of us felt confident, were interested in continuing, having fun, and would pass. Such a fun and inspiring class! Very very happy with how everything went. Could not recommend enough.

Booked this for a corporate team outing and it delivered in spades. The booking process was seamless and personalized. Our team is pretty competitive and want to be as hands on as possible. Our captains perfectly matched that energy on sailing day and were excellent teachers. Thank you Jennie, Somerset and Graham!!

We just took the ASA 101 course at the Seattle Sailing Club and couldn’t recommend it highly enough. We took the class as a couple, which was fun, as we were invited on a couple of sailing trips and didn’t want to be totally inept. The cost of the class, especially for two people, was not insignificant, but as a starting point for sailing, and as a way of creating a connecting point with other people who are interested in sailing, it was worth it. SSC is located right on Shilshole Bay—so it’s not far from Seattle, yet has direct access to the Sound. There was an appropriate amount of prep work for the class: a very detailed, illustrated booklet with many diagrams and tests, and it would be worth it to practice all the knots listed in the book—they come in handy on the boat for sure. Our class teacher was really knowledgeable and patient, and the class size (4 people in ours) was just right for getting opportunities to practice. It seems like SSC makes it possible to have a lot of opportunities to sail, even if you don’t own a boat and just want to connect with others who own or rent boats, which for people like us, unlikely to own a boat in the short term, is awesome. Highly recommended!

I took ASA 101 with Sofia and it was one of the worst learning experiences I’ve ever had. She showed up 30 minutes late both days, and once we were on the water, she constantly yelled at students and was verbally abusive. She clearly has anger issues and does not know how to manage pressure, which created a hostile and stressful environment for everyone. She made personal and inappropriate remarks—criticizing my nails in a harsh, demeaning way (I played water polo in college—I know the importance of short nails) and mocking a paddleboarder as “stupid” and “probably from California,” which felt like a targeted insult since I’m from there. Another student misunderstood her unclear instructions while docking, and Sofia immediately berated her, saying things like “This happened because of you.” Rather than teaching calmly, she blamed and shamed people for honest mistakes. This was supposed to be a fun, beginner-friendly class, but instead it felt aggressive and emotionally exhausting. Everyone on the boat was stressed. Sofia might know sailing, but her anger, impatience, and lack of professionalism make her completely unfit to be an instructor.
