Our time on the MV Discovery was the fulfillment of a dream I didn’t know I had. Alaska has been on our bucket list for years, but we don’t enjoy group tours or cruise ships. When I saw an article in NW Travel Magazine about MV Discovery and crew, I finally knew how I wanted to see Alaska. And it was the experience of a lifetime. The boat exudes classic elegance from stem to stern. Captain Ben’s pride in the boat, and how he’s sharing her with guests, is beyond amazing. Every possible detail to enhance guest comfort has been thought of. The boat is large enough to handle the seas encountered in SE Alaska, and small enough to truly be an intimate experience with a very small number of guests and crew. Captain Ben has assembled a perfect support crew, headed by his son Brandon who intends to continue the Swanson tradition with MV Discovery of curating intimate cruises in Alaska. Brandon’s attention to detail is second to none – he constantly squeegeed the boat’s many windows so guests could have the best views possible rain or shine. And the drone pics/videos he takes are stunning. Chef Rolando made our trip a gourmet delight: Each meal was extraordinary as only a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef could create. The personalities of each staff member was perfect: we were treated like royalty and fell in love with each of them. Our trip took us from Seattle to Sitka in two weeks. We saw Orcas, Humpbacks, Bears, Deer, Sea Lions, Eagles, Dall’s Porpoises, Dungeness Crab, Spot Shrimp, Halibut, and Rock Fish. We hiked in a rain forest, experienced stunningly beautiful waterfalls, kayaked amazing shorelines, got up close and personal with a glacier, and anchored in tiny bays and inlets WAY too intimate for cruise ships. We saw Alaska the way I’d always hoped we might, never dreaming it would be as wonderful an experience as it was. Our two weeks was particularly rainy, but every day the scenery was stunningly beautiful in spite of the rain. Captain Ben has lovingly and painstakingly restored the perfect boat from which to see SE Alaska, and the experiences he enables for his small number of guests are absolutely the best. We’ve traveled the world and have seen much of our amazing planet. Our trip with Classic Yacht Charters-MV Discovery was our favorite trip ever, and I’m quite sure it won’t be our last time aboard MV Discovery with Captain Ben.

If u are looking to experience the real Alaska in a small group, this is the only way to go! Family owned and operated as husband, wife, son run the trip. Plenty of room in a truly unique boat. Captain Ben is the best captain and really goes out of his way to make sure every minute of you experience is optimized. Wildlife viewing and activities daily. Would go again!

This was dream trip! Cruising on the MV Discovery with Captain Ben and his crew on the recommendation of friends was pure gold. We boarded in Sitka and journeyed through beautiful straits to Juneau. It's easy to find a quiet place to read in one of the solons or choose to join others spying bears, sea lions, whales and the rest of creation. Captain Ben's schedule allows time for the spontaneous encounters with wildlife, explore with a hike or paddle, fish, and rest in a quiet bay. If you're thinking about this excursion, think no more. Just do it!

Its hard to put such an incredible experience into words. There is absolutely no comparison to any other charter or cruise offering to experience Alaska. Captain Ben and his crew are second to none, and have created a hands on, customized approach to showing you what Alaska has to offer. Daily whale encounters (we saw humpbacks and orcas), walking amongst bear (quite literally) drinking whiskey over glacier ice, exporing wetlands and beaches, kayaking into secret coves (and even running into a porcupine), gourmet meals (when was the last time you didn't have to cook for 8 days??), overnighting in small ports to experience the local bars, catching our own dinner of halibut, crab and shrimp - and even still, I know I am missing many other things! The Discovery is an incredible vessel with a cozy yet spacious feel, with so many stories to tell - and we walked away with countless of our own. I was initially concerned with being on a boat in somewhat shared spaces (I had only ever been on a cruise liner with our own bathrooms) but I have to say I never felt exposed/inconvenienced, nor felt it was small with a full guest group. We were aboard with 3 other couples from three different countries (and all strangers to eachother) which led to endless hours of stories around the dining table. Even after our trip we have all kept in touch from across the world. There were days we didn't have service; it was so incredible to be able to just completely disconnect, and experience nature on such a personal level. If you are wanting to experience southern Alaska, this is the only option you should consider. Note: We took our trip in August 2018 and it was Juneau to Ketchikan. We are considering traveling again and found the Google page, so wanted to share our experience!

I don't even know where to begin! Captain Ben, Jamie, Mike and Hunter gave us the experience of a lifetime. We saw bears, including one swimming bear, eagles, whales, sealions, glaciers and more. Captain Ben seemed to tailor the trip to our interests. We hiked beautiful forests, kayaked in calm bays and enjoyed unbelievable food prepared by Hunter! We caught salmon, and halibut and had tons of crabs with Mike's help! We were also lucky enough to have Sarah and Shane onboard for some amazing naturalist insights! I would say it was a trip of a lifetime, but I will be back!
