Echo Canyon gets four stars from me, but only because of the crowd factor. The hike itself is awesome. I have reviewed it before and surprise, nothing has changed. Still beautiful. Still packed. It is like Camelback is the only trail people in Phoenix have heard of, so naturally the entire city decides to show up at once. If you are trying to get some peace and quiet, this is not the spot unless you show up early. Now, if you hit it before sunrise, it is a five star experience all the way. There is nothing like making it to the top, catching that first light over the valley, and smashing some summit snacks while watching the city wake up. But once 7am hits, the trail starts feeling like rush hour in hiking boots. Four stars if you go early, three if you are showing up late and trying to dodge selfie sticks the whole way up. The hike itself is moderate but can get tough if you are not prepared. Bring water. Take breaks. Do not underestimate the climb or overestimate your cardio. You are not going to impress anyone if you push too hard and have to be carried out. If you are not feeling it, turn around and come back another day. The mountain is not going anywhere. Still a solid hike with killer views, just go in knowing you are not going to be alone. Or silent. Or probably very patient.

Yes, sunrises and sunsets make for fabulous viewing. But guess what? So does right smack in the middle of the day. As evidenced by a recent climb my wife and I made on a recent trip. Just one thing: heading up the side (next to the golf course) has challenges the other side doesn’t. Wear sturdy climbing shoes, carry water and you’re sure to enjoy yourself. I think we’ve found a new fave place to hike next time we’re in Scottsdale!

I'm handicapped, so I didn't walk very far. What walking I did do, I had people help me. They were sweet. Everyone we met there was from a different state and it was also everyone's first time there, like me! The park ranger talked to all of us. He was watching the firemen train, way up high on the mountain. There were several fire engines there, and we noticed that fire danger was high today, but their miss ion was training. I saw a COSTA Hummingbird here, too, a LIFER for me!

While we didn't make it to the top, it was a beautiful trail! We enjoyed our hike and would certainly return to complete it.

The park and trail were in great condition. Clean, easy to navigate, busy but not overcrowded. Quality grip boots would be ideal and it's all pretty steep and there is a bunch of boulder climbing, rock scrambling, loose rocks and shimmying to let someone pass if they're moving faster than you and vice versa. I really enjoyed this hike on the way up and on the way down. The views were gorgeous and watching the raptors fly above and around you, as well as catching a few honey bees to observe on the wildflowers, was truly magnificent.

What safety considerations should groups be aware of when meeting at Echo Canyon Recreation Area?

While Echo Canyon Recreation Area offers fantastic opportunities for outdoor fun, groups should prepare properly for safety, especially due to the challenging nature of some trails. The main hiking routes such as Echo Canyon Trail are steep and strenuous, requiring good physical condition, appropriate footwear, and sufficient hydration. Temperatures in Phoenix can soar, especially in summer, so timing hikes for cooler parts of the day and carrying ample water are crucial to avoid heat exhaustion. Rock climbing activities demand proper climbing gear and experience or supervision by knowledgeable climbers to ensure safety on formations like the Praying Monk. Pets are allowed on some trails but restricted during extreme heat conditions, so group members with animals must be attentive to local guidelines. Additionally, since the area is sometimes busy, groups should stay close and designate meeting points to keep everyone accounted for. It is also wise to have a communication plan for emergencies, given that some trail segments have limited cell service. By respecting the environment, following posted signs, and preparing adequately, groups can enjoy a rewarding and safe outing at Echo Canyon.
