Why Fort Lawton Beach is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Fort Lawton Beach, nestled within Seattle's vibrant Magnolia neighborhood and part of the expansive Discovery Park, offers a beautiful and tranquil meeting spot for friends and nature lovers alike. This small, approximately 100-foot-long beach features light-colored sand and stunning views of Puget Sound, providing a perfect backdrop for leisurely walks, relaxing, and soaking in the serene atmosphere. The beach's rich history enhances its appeal—it was originally part of Fort Lawton, a U.S. Army post established in 1896 to protect Seattle, later playing a significant role during World War II as a major embarkation point for soldiers heading to the Pacific Theater. Today, the fort has been transformed into a community resource, with parts of the land developed into Discovery Park, preserving natural habitats and offering ample open spaces for active recreation and peaceful exploration. Fort Lawton Beach's combination of historical significance and natural beauty makes it a unique and memorable place to gather with friends, enjoy outdoor activities, and reflect on the area's meaningful past.

Discovery Park beach facing the Puget Sound with beautiful views and wide beach front of sand and rocks. Not so crowded on weekdays, fall and winter seasons. This is a popular beach and park feature with very limited parking (just 8 permitted spots). Because parking space is limited and the beach is a long way downhill from the parking lots, it is recommended to plan ahead if you intend to picnic at the beach. Secure a permit at the Visitor Center but note that it doesn't guarantee a spot because some do park illegally. Easy access to the lighthouse, and another stretch of beach on the other side (of the lighthouse fence). Great place to boat watch. Spend time here to witness the sun setting.

15 mins from Seattle downtown will take you to serene, scenic and nature filled trails. Complete transformation of scene in 15 mins From traffic noice to birds chirping. Fresh air on trails bursting with wild thick vegetation growth. You do have lot of options to choose from for trails but avoid trails closer to water treatment plant. Although map suggest flat trails but do expect some stairs as well as up and down narrow paths.

Not a fan of this "beach". Full of logs and other things in the sand, muddy in certain areas even though it hasn't rained. Overall didn't like it. Beautiful views to Rainier though!
