This is one of those places in New York City that if you know you know. The line might be intimidating, but it is absolutely worth it. The DJs are incredible. The drinks are very very good. The crowd is very beautiful. That's the best way I can put it. I would recommend getting here before 10:00 or right after 10:00 to avoid the line. The line truly can be intimidating. Let me just reiterate that but other than that 10 out of 10 would recommend to anyone who loves to dance to strictly dance disco funk music.

It is crowded, but people are respectful. Jump on the mini stage, get on the water bed, snap a picture with your bestie, and then dance to the 80s and 90s. It's like prom night, but better.

Great 70/80s dance music with a pretty eclectic crowd committed to have the best time. Energy & service was top notch, (love that water bottles were available at the bar to help yourself) including the security by the door. Drinks were a bit expensive though.

I went here for the matinee. A+. It felt like walking into a 1970s time machine with great music, dancing, and vibes. Highly recommend for an unpretentious early night… complete with a WATERBED! Docked one star for the pizza. We basically ate cardboard, but we had a great time doing so.

I really wanted to give this place a 5 star review. I saw not so great reviews before I came here, and I was in total awe of the decor and atmosphere when I got there. But, a gin and tonic was $20, and the bartender was rude. My boyfriend asked if he had any suggestions and he said "no, I don't." Then, my friend tried to meet up with us. Because it was after 9:30, she was turned away because she needed a "reservation". We had to go out and grab her, and the bouncer (girl with dark hair and bangs, you need a vibe check) said to her "yeah, you need a reservation after 930. And you never showed me your ID". To the owners of this place, y'all need to take a chill pill and speak with your employees about how to create a welcoming atmosphere.

How does Joyface’s drink selection enhance a group’s experience?
A critical highlight of Joyface is its inventive approach to cocktails which helps transform drinking into a group activity and adventure. Unlike typical bars with standard menus, Joyface uses a bowl filled with liquor and mixer names, letting guests randomly draw ingredients to inspire bartenders’ creations. This novel method sparks curiosity and surprises, fueling conversations as friends compare the flavors and stories behind their custom drinks. Expert bartenders skillfully mix these unusual combinations, often producing unexpectedly delightful and complex cocktails, including unique blends featuring mezcal, coffee, and other intriguing flavors. This “custom cocktail lottery” adds a fun and participatory twist rather than the passive act of ordering from a fixed list. For group meetups, this turns drinks into talking points and shared tasting experiences, heightening group bonding. Additionally, standard cocktails like gin martinis are also available for those preferring classics. Overall, the drink experience balances innovation with quality and personal choice, enriching the social atmosphere.
What are the challenges and considerations for groups planning to visit Joyface?
While Joyface offers a vibrant and unique nightlife experience, groups considering it for meetups should be aware of some challenges. The bar has received mixed reviews regarding service, with some patrons reporting rude or inattentive staff, which can detract from the overall enjoyment. Entry can be competitive, especially on weekends, so arriving early—before 10:30 pm—is advised to secure space for larger groups. The dance floor is relatively small, meaning that during busy times it may feel crowded, which might not suit groups expecting spacious room to move freely. Also, the eclectic and vintage ambiance may not appeal to everyone, particularly those preferring modern or minimalist settings. Despite these considerations, many find the inconsistencies manageable in light of the bar’s charm and the quality of its drinks and atmosphere. Groups should plan accordingly, keep expectations balanced, and embrace the quirky, somewhat unpredictable nature that makes Joyface special.
How does Joyface compare to other East Village bars for group socializing?
Joyface sets itself apart from other East Village bars chiefly through its distinctive 1970s-themed aesthetic and its interactive cocktail concept. Many bars in the neighborhood feature more conventional designs and drink menus, whereas Joyface offers patrons a tactile, immersive environment that feels more like stepping into a retro lounge party than a standard bar. Its dual focus on dancing and lounging caters to varied group preferences, unlike venues that skew heavily toward either a dance club atmosphere or a quiet bar setting. Furthermore, Joyface’s welcoming stance toward diverse patrons and the LGBTQ+ friendly reputation, albeit with some contention, adds an inclusive social dimension that can be important for group outings seeking acceptance and safety. While some competitors might offer more polished or upscale experiences, Joyface thrives as a more relaxed, playful option that encourages social interaction through its thematic flair and inventive drink service. This makes it a recommended choice for groups who want a casual yet memorable venue beyond the typical bar experience.
What tips maximize the social experience at Joyface for groups?
To get the best out of a group meetup at Joyface, certain strategies can enhance the experience. Arriving early, especially on weekends, secures better seating for your party before the crowd grows. Engaging actively with the cocktail selection game by selecting ingredients together can turn the drink order process into a fun group bonding exercise. Dressing in retro or disco-inspired attire can heighten the ambiance, aligning your group’s look with the bar's vibe and making the night feel like a special event. Mix some time between dancing on the disco-lit floor and relaxing on the couches to balance energy and conversation.
