Why Malvern Books is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Malvern Books is an independent bookstore located in Austin, Texas, renowned for its dedication to diverse and marginalized voices in literature. Since its founding in 2013 by Joe Bratcher, who has a deep background in English literature and publishing, Malvern Books has offered a curated selection focusing on titles from independent presses, including poetry, fiction, and chapbooks by women, people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ writers. The bookstore occupies a distinctive 2,500-square-foot space that creatively repurposed its previous life as adult-themed businesses into a welcoming literary environment. The interior's rustic ambiance is enhanced by mushroom wood paneling and blue Marmoleum floor tiles shaped to resemble a river, thematically echoed in the store's logo. Its mission and atmosphere attract a thoughtful, community-minded clientele who appreciate both the unique book selection and the inviting space.

Beware of booting. Tiny signs at side of road and a on duty unmarked car booked me when I walked across the tiny street for 3 minutes! It cost me $100. They BOOT THE PARKING LOT, 3 MINUTES NO JOKE, DON'T LEAVE PARKING LOT after parking car in unmarked "stress-free " parking spaces.

Wonderful bookstore with staff who love poetry and literature and are warm. They also make interesting recommendations. The poetry bundle option (20% off!) is hilarious and fun. I bought a Polish Poetry Bundle yesterday. Great place to get lost browsing. So nice to have this resource locally.

My go-to for finding new and exciting books. I am not personally good at finding new books and am not an avid reader as much as I once was, but they are changing that! Their recommendations were all specific and perfect. I’ve also had them do recommendations for other people. The staff are extremely kind and helpful. This place is the exact reason small local bookstores are essential. The online and big chain stores aren’t going to find you something specific to your tastes. Shop here!! They’re amazing!

A very unique and local bookstore that specializes in selling books by local as well as international authors. One of my favorite things about this store is that it places more emphasis on highlighting books that were not best sellers but still have quality content. Already loving the recommendation by the store staff.

I'm a little biased as I have a partner who works here, but I'm gonna try to ignore that. Malvern is just... utterly unique and so important. I still probably go to Half Price for the bulk of the books I need from authors with 7/10 name recognition or higher. But what Malvern provides is the opposite: individualized recommendations from the most voracious readers (most of them writers, too) you've ever met. It's "come in and we'll give you something new to try", in the vein of the kinds of video stores Quentin Tarantino bragged about working at. This place is the antidote to Amazon. Plus, if you're a poetry nerd, you'll recognize it can often be difficult to find any whatsoever in chain stores or at Half Price, let alone the problem of developing a compass for what to try. No such problem here. Every time I've gone in to scratch that itch, Stephanie or one of the other poets on staff has listened attentively to the kind of thing I feel like reading and then made a beeline to Snatch something off the shelves and shove it in my hands and that kind of experience is priceless.
