The rental employee checked and adjusted my gear and answered all my questions about it and was knowledgeable. The front desk staff answered my questions about climbing Hood and showed me online weather forecasting resources. I also lost one of my crampons and they only charged me $15 for the gear, which is quite reasonable. I would definitely rent gear there again.

I was in town visiting family and stopped here for rentals to climb Mt Adams. Fair prices and good conditions on the rentals, and good selection for other gear I needed to buy. The staff were helpful as well. Highly recommend.

Their boot fitting service is top shelf. They took the time to make sure that my ski mountaineering boots fit perfectly. It makes such a huge difference to have boots that fit comfortably and correctly. The very next day I summited and skied down Mt. Hood pain free and with a smile on my face. They also outfitted my nephew with all the rental gear that he was missing for a successful trip. Best Mountaineering shop in PDX.

I would agree with Kyles review below on poor customer service and experienced first hand what Martin Taylor described below about thier crampon fitting. I would not trust a planned apline adventure to thier current rental staff as it may lead to a precarious, potentially dangerous situation or at a minumun ruin your planned adventure vacation. The staff at the rental counter got rude as soon as I said I didnt know my European boot size? Then he put my foot in a shoe size gauge and proceeded to hand me the dirtiest, muddiest boots on the rack the bent my toes (at least 2 sizes to small it seemed) I tried them on and said they were too tight and he got more rude and condescending then told me how my boot should feel then handed me another pair that actually fit right ( I have been climbing for 30 years and know when a boot fits right). I gave him the boots and he proceeded to set up the crampons then condescendingly showed me how the strap system worked. He then charged me 15 dollars more than my partner was charged for what was supposedly the same package. My group of 3 left left Timberline at 1:00 and reached the top of Palmer around 3:30. Immediately after putting on the crampons I could feel them painfully jamming in my heels.. I tried a few times to keep climbing but the pain was too much and not knowing how to loosen the length with freezing winds and frozen fingers I decided to decend at let my climbing partners continue on to the summit. In hindsight I would have worn the boots and crampons in the store.. (The only other boots I have used automatic crampons on were full hieght Scarpa’s with a way more reinforced heel so was unaware this could be an issue.) I then proceeded to decend and wait on a rock through the night for 7 hours as they completed the scheduled climbing vacation. When returning the equipment and telling The Mountain shop rental staff about what happened they were unapologetic and kinda rude. When I asked about the overcharge he said he would credit my account (which still hasn’t happend) I then asked him to credit my account for the full rental. Then he put one of my boots in a crampon and with a violent snap told me its fine, I asked him to try it on and tell me is fine.. then a girl behind the counter that looks like she has never climbed a mountain took the other boot and forefully leaned into to snap it it. The snap was so loud people in line looked at me like whoa 😳. She then proceeded to tell me that they are fine and was unapologetic still. Basically I paid them 50 bucks to take an unpaid day of work to climb 3000’ in two miles up a snow slodge turn around and wait 7 hours in a parking lot for a climbing partner with car keys. In review, I would not trust an alpine vacation gear rental to this store or you may find yourself in an uncomfortable, possibly dangerous situation. They fact they they were rude, unprofessional and uncaring of the situation just made it worse.

It's a solid shop with good gear and knowledgeable staff that's ready to help you out! I also think that their rental service is solid! In fact, the K2 EST snowboards that they use for rental boards are so good for what they are that I decided to purchase one! I got it off of outandbackoutdoor.com for just $50 (they had an 86% off sale for it)! It's not the best board, but it's good enough, and I got my complete setup for just $286 total (board, boots, bindings, AND my board getting a premium edge sharpening plus waxing job)! This almost certainly wouldn't have happened if not for the great experience I had with the K2 EST 160 cm boards I rented from this place! They also helped me fully realize my binding angle preferences too (15-18 degree range on both bindings)! The only reason I'm not giving a five star is because for some reason they don't sell snowboard gear which bums me out (and also confuses me because Evo Portland is not far from this shop at all and sells both snowboard and ski gear AND more). Anyways, I hope this helps people! Jacob
