Natural Bridges State Beach

Why Natural Bridges State Beach is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Natural Bridges State Beach, perched on the scenic shores of Santa Cruz, California, is renowned for its namesake natural rock arch—once part of a trio, now a single, dramatic offshore landmark that has become one of the most photographed spots on the California coast[1][3]. This 65-acre state park is a magnet for both adventure seekers and families, offering an enticing blend of natural wonders and recreational amenities. With its expansive sandy beach, it’s a favorite for sunbathing, beachcombing, and flying kites in the ocean breezes[5]. The beach’s tide pools, revealed at low tide, teem with vibrant marine life—sea anemones, sea stars, and hermit crabs—making it a fascinating destination for budding marine biologists and curious kids[5]. Nature lovers will also find delight in the Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve, where, from October through February, thousands of monarch butterflies overwinter, turning the park into a fluttering spectacle[1][5]. Picnic areas nestled among eucalyptus and pine trees provide a perfect retreat for casual gatherings, while the accessible boardwalk and hiking trails, including those through the Moore Creek Wetlands, encourage leisurely exploration and birdwatching. Natural Bridges’ combination of dramatic scenery, abundant wildlife, and family-friendly facilities make it an excellent choice for a memorable day out with friends, whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a peaceful communion with nature[1][5].
Here's what people think of Natural Bridges State Beach
As of recent, Natural Bridges State Beach holds a 4.7-star rating based on 2100 reviews.
Natural Bridges State Beach boasts a stellar reputation among visitors, reflected in its impressive 4.7-star rating from over 2,100 reviews. Many reviewers praise the park’s breathtaking views, particularly highlighting the iconic rock arch as a jaw-dropping backdrop for photos and a unique feature that sets it apart from other beaches. The tide pools and marine life are frequent highlights, with visitors appreciating the opportunity to observe colorful sea creatures up close—especially for families with children[2][5]. The easy accessibility of the park, well-maintained facilities, and the added attraction of the monarch butterfly preserve during winter months are also commonly cited as major positives. Reviewers frequently mention the park’s cleanliness, the quality of its picnic areas, and the sense of tranquility found on the beach even during busy times. However, some visitors note drawbacks, including parking challenges on peak days and the $10 vehicle day-use fee[3]. A few reviews mention that the beach can be windy and chilly, even in summer, and that the single remaining arch, while beautiful, is a reminder that some of the park’s former grandeur has been lost to erosion over the years[3]. Overall, the consensus is overwhelmingly positive, with most reviewers agreeing that Natural Bridges State Beach is a must-visit destination for its unique natural features, wildlife, and family-friendly atmosphere.

Gorgeous state beach to explore. The water is stunning as you watch is crash and dance on the rocks, the fresh air fills your lungs as you hear seagulls flying by, you can find small crabs and other sea life in the pools, and you can take a lovely stroll along the sand. This beach is so nice and relaxing, perfect for a solo adventure or if you have kids! I came here with my family and while we were here there were families and the kids were enjoying their time exploring the beach. I’d recommend bringing a light jacket especially if it’s overcast since the wind can be a bit chilly. Will absolutely be back the time time I come to Santa Cruz!

A nice, quiet beach on the Westside of Santa Cruz! There is a small parking lot just past the gate, which is great for taking in the view or having a quick meal. If you plan on staying for the day or a few hours, there is a paid parking lot that you can use, or street parking heading towards the beach on Swanton Blvd. During the summer, parking on the street will be fairly hard to find, so prepare to pay a $10 parking fee (which supports the beach and employees who work there and maintain the land). North on the beach, you can find some tide pools, which are great for taking photographs (I've seen wedding, graduation, and family photography there), but be careful in case a wave splashes up and slippery rocks! There are also a couple of trails at this beach known as the Natural Bridges Monarch Trails, where sometimes you'll find Monarch butterflies on their migration path, and if you're lucky, you'll spot a few around Santa Cruz as well! Birds frequently hang out on the rocks as well if you're into birdwatching, and depending on the tides, you'll spot some surfers as well!

Got here around 1pm on Saturday. Free street parking was full, so we paid $10.00. They have a small visitor center with maps, a small gift shop, and some animal and plant exhibits. We did the Monach Trail hike, and it took about 1 hour to get to the beach. We saw butterflies, 3 deers, and different flowers along the way. Easy quick hike.
