Soul Prime is such a vibe—a real gem in Chicago. I’d heard great things about it, so I made the trip in from the suburbs to celebrate my friend’s birthday. The restaurant is on the smaller side but feels cozy, with stylish decor that sets a relaxed mood. One of the best parts was the owner coming over to our table and chatting with us like old friends. She was genuinely welcoming, which really added to the experience. I ordered the short rib tacos and the collard green dip—both were flavorful and delicious. My friend got the 290 Combo, and the fish and chicken were fresh. It could have used a bit more seasoning, but it was still very tasty overall. I’d definitely recommend Soul Prime and look forward to coming back again.

What can I say… I stumbled upon this hidden gem after getting a massage, near by. I was able to walk in and secure a table at 3 pm on a Thursday afternoon. The place is quaint so I wouldn’t chance a walk in during the evening or weekends. I was greeted by very pleasant and friendly faces which is a plus. The owner was also such a sweetheart. She came around and talked to everyone. The vibe and music were on point! I could hardly eat my food for bobbing and singing to the mix of music that was playing. Food: Fried Green Tomatoes -1000/10! I order fried green tomatoes every where and these were the best I ever had. The flavor profile was fye🔥🔥 Beef Short Rib Tacos -10/10 They were very juicy and flavorful 290 Platter ( Fried Catfish, wings, fries and cornbread muffins)- 10/10 Banana Pudding - 10/10 I loved the fact that it was homemade and not like the Snack Pack creations that a lot of places sell. Sweet Potato Pie & Ice Cream - 7/10 Spiked Strawberry Lemonade 10/10 I would definitely recommend!

I rate my Mother’s Day experience a 6/10… Me and my family were excited to dine in at this establishment to celebrate Mother’s Day, and to support a Black Owned Business, but we were not satisfied. We drove over 40min to get to this establishment, and were not impressed with the dining selection. The staff and service during our dine in was good. The ambiance, was beautiful, and they even provided roses to all the women who entered. Upon looking at the menu, we noticed that there was a “fixed” menu with no substitutions. We also noticed that a lot of the menu options were not “Upscale Southern Cuisine” in my opinion. All entrees were paired with either grits, or French fries, while the actual side dishes were all a la carte. The Mother’s Day menu pro’s were the Firecracker Buffalo Shrimp, Fried Green Tomatoes, Macaroni and Yams. Our con’s, the chicken didn’t have any flavor and needed more seasoning, the ribs needed to be wrapped in foil and placed back in the oven in order to be more tender, and the drinks weren’t memorable. Overall, the service, appetizers and side dishes were good, but the lack of pallet flavor for the entrees and fried menu offerings made this visit a 6/10. I would not drive over 40min again just to eat Chicken and Fries for a special occasion.

Overall, Soul Prime was a good experience. Not great. I will say majority of the customer service was good. Baby it’s slow. I understand it was a Sunday and Mother’s Day , but it was an extended wait for appetizers (which came out separate back to back) And our entrees. And it wasn’t until my boyfriend got up to speak with Hostess until it arrived. Our waiter was sweet but it seems he avoided the table while we waited for our food sensing our irritation. That’s something that can be approved: having waiters set realistic expectations. A different waiter told us 5 min and it ended up being 20 more on top of the 30-40 we waited. Also it didn’t help others foods came out before ours. The food was pretty good but a few items were just okay. It was hot and fresh. But I think some of the sauces on the food was drenched and wasn’t the most flavorful. My hot and honey chicken just felt like honey and a sweet & sour type of sauce I didn’t care for. I can’t say I would be in a rush to go back but the owner was extremely nice. Another thing I didn’t really care for personally was having two hostess frequent our table. The black. Hostess was lovely and I wish I got her name! She was so sweet and attentive. The white hostess wasn’t bad but she kept dropping stuff on our table rudely, borderline throwing. I don’t think it was a personal issues with her and our table, she did it to everyone I observed. But I think just being mindful to have only one white hostess in a black owned establishment on Mothers Day with all black customers throwing items and it’s landing in our food or plates unintentionally is still a headache. Again, this review isn’t bashing anyone. Just not the most memorable experience for my mom who had to wait a while to eat. And I also think for the bill to be $500 for four people and our food was over 40 minutes late and no real apology was given didn’t sit well with me, but overall, I still wish this business the most success.
