After-work dance vibes @ The Ailey Studios Highly recommend dropping by The Ailey Studios after work for a dance class — it’s such a warm and welcoming community, with professional teachers. I used to do more “structured” ballet, but I tried West African dance for the first time — barefoot, heart open, completely swept away by the live drumming! The space here is clean and well-maintained, which makes dancing even more enjoyable. What’s amazing is — you can learn literally any style of dance you’re curious about. From ballet to West African, contemporary to hip hop — they’ve got it all. Plus, the class levels are clearly structured: absolute beginner, beginner, and beyond. So it’s really easy to find the right class for your level and grow at your own pace.

This is a professional dance school in a beautiful building and location in midtown. There are classes available for all levels and motivations, whether you’re a novice just starting, someone looking for a fun way to improve fitness, or a professional training in the different techniques. I took many classes here, and because I am by no means much of a dancer, embarrassed myself a lot. It was a wonderful experience and opportunity to take world-class, professional dance training though.

LOVE coming here for dance classes! The instructors are fantastic, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the facilities are large and clean. They have a variety of classes available in studio or online, and a wide range of levels. I’ve taken Absolute Beginner Contemporary, Horton, Ballet, Hip Hop, and Vogue - all classes I’d readily take again. Such a fun way to work out and learn some new moves!

I attended a beginner heels class at The Ailey Extension with Aaron Thomas and left deeply disappointed and embarrassed. As someone who was genuinely excited to try something new and empowering, I was shocked by how publicly dismissive the instructor was. Aaron moved me out of the front of the class and made a comment in front of everyone implying that those who don’t know the steps should stay in the back. This wasn’t helpful—it was humiliating. Several people laughed, and the energy shifted from welcoming to shameful in seconds. I’ve never been treated like that in a learning space. I reached out to the studio about the experience, and the response I got was a rushed, copy-paste message offering me another class without actually addressing what happened. No accountability. No sincere apology. Just a blanket statement saying their instructors are “caring” when my experience clearly says otherwise. If you’re a true beginner looking for a safe and encouraging environment to try heels dance—this was not it. I hope the studio takes better responsibility in the future for how instructors treat new students.

I just saw their tremendous performance at the Mesa Arts Center. This was the amazing most night. The music was eclectic and compelling, ranging from incredible modern rhythms, through the sounds of atonal post-modern classical, and into impeccable choral renditions of old African-American spirituals. The choreography was stunning and unexpected at times but always evocative. The dancers obviously loved performing these pieces and did a spectacular job of conveying the angst and joy inherent in the songs. Such artistry and altheticism is unparalleled. Bravo! Just wow.
