Get ready for a paradigm shift. Jill's Nutshell Technique breaks down all of your favorite movies into 8 key elements and helps you to see the patterns and structure of every screenplay. Taking her class is like drinking from a fire hose, so buckle up and get ready to take A LOT of notes. The five weeks I spent in Jill's introductory screenplay workshop were some of the best I've ever experienced as a student -- and that is saying a lot since I'm a life-long student of all things having to do with literature and writing. In fact, I'm planning to go back for her advanced course in a few months. Jill is an incredibly knowledgeable teacher. In both her direct instruction and her leading of workshop, she is sincere, straightforward, and sharp. She's an incredible listener, and she truly strives to help all students make their writing the best it can be. I also really appreciate how organized and structured each part of the course is -- she's really done her preparation for class, which is why no time is wasted. I highly recommend Jill's Screenplay Workshop.

The screenplay workshop has helped me immensely with my writing. The 10 week course is well structured and revolves around Jill's Nutshell technique. The technique is learned through examples, the application of the nutshell to your story, and critiquing the stories of your peers. What I liked most about the nutshell method was that it's not a paint-by-numbers outline, but rather a looser structure revolving around some key elements and how they interact with each other. Jill is incredibly insightful and offers really valuable feedback. She also does a great job of cultivating a community within the workshop. I can see taking her class again when I want to workshop future story ideas. It's a great way to go from idea to first draft (if you're ambitious) in a little over two months.

As an alum of The Screenplay Workshop, I believe it deserves the highest rating. Writing has been an important component of my profession, but I had never ventured out into creative writing. In talking to my son about the desire to try my hand at creative writing, he suggested The Screenplay Workshop. He had taken Jill's class and loved it. I took his suggestion and loved it too. Jill's nutshell technique is unique and provides the key to crafting a viable screenplay. It is only eight steps, but they must work together in an integral way for the story hold together and to be compelling. Like a Rubik's cube in that it takes time and effort to put all the pieces in place. But when that is accomplished, the plot always works. Jill is an excellent teacher who gives helpful but honest feedback in a respectful manner. The 10 week course covers all aspects of screenplay writing. In addition the class watches a movie each week to help us see it structure and understand why and how it works. Class members who want to socialize and discuss films and writing have an opportunity to do so after each class. My fellow class members were some of the most interesting and creative people I've met in Austin. We vary greatly in age, writing experience, professions, and personal backgrounds, which serves to make conversations a learning and and enriching experience.
