Why Urban Peak Shelter is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Urban Peak Shelter is a dedicated nonprofit organization focused on empowering youth aged 15 to 24 experiencing homelessness in the Denver metro area. What makes Urban Peak a great place to meet up with friends is not only its physical shelter but its comprehensive, trauma-informed approach that addresses the deep-rooted needs of vulnerable youth. Unlike typical shelters, Urban Peak provides a vibrant, nurturing environment affectionately known as “The Mothership,” a progressive campus designed to offer integrated services and housing options that bridge the gap from emergency shelter to transitional and long-term independent living. The shelter ensures young people have access to essential resources like meals, showers, vital documents, medical clinics, and workforce development programs. It also emphasizes emotional and social support through specialized case management, including education, employment, clinical assistance, and life skills training, all tailored to help youth build self-sufficiency and resilience. This holistic approach recognizes and addresses trauma in a compassionate way, fostering safe, supportive relationships that many of these youth have never experienced. Serving approximately 1,000 young people annually, Urban Peak embodies hope and opportunity, offering both immediate safety and pathways toward fulfilled lives. Its partnership with local organizations amplifies its reach, increasing positive outcomes for youth in the community and making it not just a shelter, but a welcoming hub for connection, growth, and transformation.

While driving past the new addition to Urban Peak, I was inspired to share my story and express my gratitude for this immense symbol of love for our city's young people. Urban Peak is a place to survive, find hope, and eventually overcome obstacles to change your story. As a teenager, I experienced frequent housing instability. A friend brought me to Urban Peak during the day for medical and educational services. The compassion, guidance, and empowerment I received in just a few visits were life-changing. Most significantly, the GED prep program gave me the skills, confidence, and financial resources I needed to take and pass the test. That milestone allowed me to join the military and eventually go to college. In 2015, 11 years after taking practice GED exams on a long table in a small, crowded room with a kind tutor, I returned to Urban Peak as a college graduate to work as an overnight direct care counselor. Not much had changed—except there were more computers, and all GED prep had moved to the Stout Street location. The staff still seemed the same: kind, strong, and inhumanly patient. Like the young people who visited, the shelter was a bit rough, scrappy, resilient, and brimming with the potential to change the world for the better. It survived in a city where other tenacious, vital nonprofits competed for resources. The building was small and run-down, but I was so grateful it was still there. The kids deserved a place to feel safe and get help. Eventually, when I could not make ends meet with the do-gooder wage and a few side gigs, I left the little shelter, hoping it would always remain a haven for our youth. Now, when I drive by and see a magnificent building that can help even more kids in even more powerful ways, I am moved to tears. It feels like a huge sign from our city that reads: You matter to all of us, and we've got you. I think of myself as a 16-year-old, looking for the warmest, slightly enclosed spot at the Alameda station where I would spend the night, wondering how many months it would take for someone to notice if I disappeared. And I think: this means she mattered too. Thank you to everyone who has kept Urban Peak alive and brought it to where it is today.
