Why Amir's Garden is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

Amir's Garden is a unique and enchanting garden set high atop Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Established in 1971 by Amir Dialameh, an Iranian immigrant and passionate gardener, the garden serves as a serene oasis perfect for meeting with friends and enjoying nature. Despite its arid, rocky setting and the challenges posed by California's severe droughts, this garden flourishes through the dedication of volunteers and innovative use of water sprinklers, hand watering, and fire-resistant plants. The garden features a mix of native and non-native plants with tropical and succulent sections, all developed over decades. Visitors appreciate the handcrafted terraces, vintage benches made from recycled park materials, and the peaceful plazas offering shaded seating areas with beautiful views of the city and surrounding hills. The garden's location on an east-facing slope creates a microclimate that adds to its charm and botanical diversity. Beyond the plants, Amir's Garden has a folk-art vibe reminiscent of iconic California creations, blending nature, history, and community spirit in a rare landscape that invites leisurely exploration and quiet contemplation among friends.

Reviewers also admire the volunteer efforts, especially the caretaker Kristin Sabo, who continues Amir Dialameh's legacy by nurturing the garden with care and dedication. Many highlight the garden's accessibility via a short but steep trail and commend its tranquil environment for small gatherings or solitary escapes in the city. The hike is nice enough - good views and relatively short - but the “garden”itself is very overgrown and not tended, so don’t come with the expectation of spending any time there.

Really lovely little hike. It is steep and straight up but enjoyed it. Nice loop. Wear athletic shoes as the ground there’s some holes, stairs and uneven surfaces

I didn’t realize that parking at the Mineral Wells Picnic Area was probably the better way to come from, but we parked at the golf course which does have a trail that will take you to Amir’s Garden it’s just longer. Plus there was a shortcut staircase we could’ve taken but the weeds were so overgrown we missed it. If you come from the golf course, on the trail is a fallen tree with caution tape, across from that are the hidden stairs. If you aren’t wearing proper hiking shoes, just take the long way which is fairly easy. The garden is lovely, it’s amazing the difference one person can make. It was very inspiring.

We do this hike regularly and we love it! There are couple of steeper sections but there are also areas of moderate incline. The views of the city and its greenery are well worth it. The high is frequent by a lot of dog owners and also a runners club. And the top the garden itself offers a spot with drinking water couple of benches for sitting and multiple levels of garden on the hillside to explore. A nice and peaceful place to come to once seeking respite from the busy Citi life.

Doing after school hikes and adventures gives the opportunity to introduce to the kids epic trails and places in Griffith Park! The trail to Amir’s does need repair but it didn’t deter the kids or myself to hike up. For the kids the reward was so great. So many different areas to explore in the immediate area. There is a little construction happening, so I’m excited to go back and see it again.
