Aurora Theatre Company
Why Aurora Theatre Company is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
Aurora Theatre Company, a professional theatre group founded in 1992 in Berkeley, California, offers a uniquely intimate theatre experience that attracts friends and theatre enthusiasts alike. Situated in a custom-designed 150-seat venue in downtown Berkeley's Arts District, the setting fosters a "chamber theatre" atmosphere, ensuring that audience members are never more than 15 feet from the stage. This closeness encourages a deep connection to performances, making it an ideal meeting place for those who appreciate nuanced storytelling and live dramatic art. Aurora’s focus is on producing plays that prioritize powerful ideas and storytelling over spectacle, presenting a diverse, five-play season that blends contemporary voices, reimagined classics, and new works. The company’s commitment to quality and meaningful theatre is underscored by its dedication to employing a high percentage of Equity actors and being recognized with numerous Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle awards. Beyond its regular programming, Aurora also fosters new work through initiatives such as the Global Age Project, an annual staged reading festival, and Originate+Generate, their new play commissioning program. This dedication to both artistic excellence and community-oriented performance space makes Aurora Theatre Company a wonderful destination for gathering with friends to experience engaging, thoughtful theatre in a cozy, inviting environment.
Here's what people think of Aurora Theatre Company
As of recent, Aurora Theatre Company holds a 4.7-star rating based on 119 reviews.
User reviews consistently praise Aurora Theatre Company for its compelling, actor-driven productions and the rare intimacy of its performance space, which allows audiences to engage deeply with the actors and the text. Positive feedback highlights the high professional standards, powerful storytelling, and the company’s dedication to thought-provoking plays that resonate on a personal level. Reviewers appreciate the diversity of the season’s offerings and the support for local Bay Area artists, as well as the commitment to fair pay and the prominence of Equity actors, which elevates the quality they experience. However, some negative reviews and recent reports reflect concerns about the company's financial struggles and operational sustainability. A significant financial shortfall and reduced audience numbers have forced the company to pause its 2025–26 season, which has worried patrons and theatre lovers about its future viability. This challenge echoes a broader crisis facing many nonprofit theaters in the region, where declining ticket sales and donor fatigue threaten the survival of important cultural institutions. Despite this, community members continue to express strong emotional support for Aurora’s mission and the artistic value it has provided for over three decades. Overall, the reviews convey a narrative of a treasured local institution currently navigating difficult times but remembered fondly for its artistic integrity and meaningful impact on audiences.

This is like your best friends house - casual, friendly and always entertaining. The intimacy provides a much different, and in some ways better, experience than going into the City or even Broadway. If you are any type of patron of the arts, this is a must go. Also - loved Dry Powder.

I went to see The Lifespan of a Fact 3 days after seeing Morher Road at the Berkeley Rep… right next door. Mother Road was like Theatre 2.0 while the Aurora Theatre performance was like Theatre 3.0… theatre elevated! Everything you want non-musical live theatre to be (btw Mother Road had a smattering of non memorable music) But the contrast of the experience made it clear why I left Mother Road at intermission…. And was (in contrast) on the edge of my seat the entire “Lifespan of a Fact” performance Despite the fact that often the audience is 3 feet from the actors on “stage” at the Aurora …the performances felt real …like you were a fly on the wall …and this was really happening And like real life…the conflicts don’t get all buttoned up…there is no formula. There are life-like dilemmas with no clear answer… even from the final lines in the final scene Will I go to a Berkeley rep show again? … prob… to see a musical… because there’s a time and place for a feel-good, predictable, formulaic show that teaches a clear inspirational lesson. But if you want theatre that perks you up and offers a reframing of a society you THINK you understood… stick to the Aurora theatre…and by all means see The Lifespan of a Fact. Directing, lighting, acting, overall cleverness, realism of script …and humor under stress! A+++
