One of the best if not the best biking trail in Manhattan. I recommend this route to every friend visiting NYC. The waterfront is also walkable right next to the trail. Beware of fast bikers though - please stay on the right if you are biking slow.

The Empire State trail was recommended to me by a fellow bike lover who is a new york local, and I re-recommend this trail to all bikers i meet. I have ridden this trail many times, initially with a friend of mine who visited. This trail goes all the way up through the entirety of manhattan and into new york “state”. When i took the trail as a day trip with a friend, we started in battery park and stopped a little bit after the George Washington bridge which is at 178th street. There begins to be a much steeper incline and there aren’t any citibike stations nearby. I used my own bike and my friend used citibike, we managed with the citibike subscription because there are frequent citibike stops on the trail so its easy to switch in and out without going over the 30 minute limit. However at around 155th street the citibike stations begin to get farther and farther and aren’t that close to the trail, so if you dont want to be stressed about going over the 30 minute limit then i would take a trip from battery park to 155th street citibike station, then walk a few blocks in and take the 1 train wherever you need to go. However, there are some very scenic spots between 155th street and the George Washington bridge, so if its possible I would still ride it. There will be other bikers on this route which is something to be aware of. But the route is completely flat, paved, beautiful, especially well maintained the closer to the city center you are. You can stop and get food off the trail super easily so it makes for a very casual day trip. Recommended for all, you do not need to be “athletic” or have any fancy gear, I rode this trail with older family members during a heat wave and we were good, just took many breaks.
