For the last 10 years I have seen the development of this park as it has become a focal point for the actual residents of the surrounding area regardless of their socioeconomic standing. It was once a barren patch of brown and is now a tidy modern refuge. I will admit that some of the more noticeable people, often due to any combination of public drug use, mental health crisis, lack of housing, and every other omnipresent social ill are present here. They can be very messy and leave a trail of garbage and tweaker treasure. They are the outliers whose pictures give outrage media their clicks but they are a small, highly visible minority. This park has a water fountain and water bottle station. Coupled with nearby hospital bathrooms, mental and substance treatment clinics, the water provides a requirement of life no longer free at starbucks to the destitute. It is the regular faces seen for teatment amongst the neighbors walking their dogs that have made this special place and given those looking to recover a sense of belonging.
