After a nice dinner in Ballard, we stopped by Hot Cakes for a quick dessert, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite meet expectations. We were hoping to try the layer cake we’d seen in a photo, but when we arrived, they were out of it. Not a huge deal, so we decided to try something else, but it ended up being underwhelming. The cake we tried had very little flavor, and overall it felt more like a beginner-level baking attempt. The raspberry underneath the ice cream was the highlight and expresso, but aside from that, there wasn’t much to be excited about. For a place that gets so much attention, I was expecting a lot more. It just didn’t live up to the hype, and I’m not sure it’s worth another visit.

Literally so amazing! I used to come here as a treat when I lived in Magnolia and have dreamt about it for years. I was finally able to return and it was just as divine as I remembered. Is there a better combo than chocolate lava cake, caramel, and homemade ice cream? The answer is no, absolutely not. The vegan options are fantastic and I hope to be back very, very soon!

Much of the seemingly traditional named desserts are made with a fushion of spices and other new combination of ingredients. Drinks are crafted as well. Seasonal menus available. Most concoctions are new takes on American classics so expect higher sugar content or taste. Servings are dense and ample. Counter service and self seating is the standard. The place is very rustic and informal. Often packed during after dinner times. Ideal for dates and small groups.
