Parking was pretty easy to locate. Tickets are reasonable. Seats comfortable and theater set up was great for viewing. I found the sound of music from the venue next door disruptive - maybe have shows at 5pm on Saturday instead of 730pm? I didn't totally get the play I saw but the set design was smashing!

Magic happens here! Hands down my favourite theatre in Portland. Original plays, adaptations, family shows that are a treat no matter how old you are. Not to mention design, stage craft, great costumes, masks, laughter, amazement and sighs.... If you have not been, expand your world already, your eyes and mind will love you for it!!

This is a great theater! I was with a company that performed there for three weekends. We really enjoyed the space. It was a really great stage with great sounds and lights. It seats just shy of 200 and the seats come right down to the stage making for intimate environment with lots of energy. We also used the ballroom upstairs which is a great space for events! We are definitely headed back there in the future. Highly recommend.

I'm from out of town and stayed at the Jupiter across the street. I happily found this gem while walking around and had a wonderful experience watching a Sunday matinee of "Where's Bruno?" The story was great and the performance was even better! I'll be back next time I'm in town!

How accessible and comfortable is the space for visitors?
Imago Theatre's small venue design offers a uniquely intimate theatrical experience, though it may pose some challenges for those seeking luxury seating or extensive legroom. The theater occupies a funky, older building that blends historic charm with a laid-back vibe, helping to foster a relaxed and engaging environment. Although the space embraces its industrial character, like concrete floors and exposed beams, this adds to the authenticity and raw aesthetic appreciated by many theatergoers who favor artistry over opulence. However, the seating arrangement in some productions, such as “Scorpio Moon,” features tiered seats facing a defined stage, which can feel rigid and potentially uncomfortable during longer shows. Despite this, visitors often find that the proximity to the performers and the immersive nature of the productions compensate well for these minor comfort issues. The theater is mindful of visitor needs, providing a welcoming lobby with refreshments and a communal atmosphere. This balance makes Imago Theatre very accessible for groups looking to share a compelling cultural encounter in a distinctive and cozy venue.
What makes Imago Theatre unique compared to other theaters?
Imago Theatre stands out from many traditional theaters thanks to its commitment to immersive and site-specific performances that challenge conventional staging and narrative forms. Rather than just presenting plays on a typical proscenium stage, it often transforms its industrial space into vivid environments that draw audiences physically and emotionally into the story world. This approach fosters a more dynamic relationship between performers and viewers and allows groups to experience theater in fresh, unexpected ways. Productions like Scorpio Moon illustrate this with their exploration of social themes deeply woven into modern settings, creating art that feels urgent and relevant. Meanwhile, shows like ZooZoo demonstrate the theater’s flexibility by catering effectively to family audiences with imaginative, playful storytelling. The eclectic mix of programming—from cutting-edge contemporary plays to beloved classics—ensures that diverse audiences find something compelling year-round. Additionally, Imago's reputation for artistic innovation is matched by the friendly community atmosphere it nurtures, which invites repeated visits and shared cultural appreciation among groups. These qualities collectively give Imago Theatre a distinctive identity as both an avant-garde art hub and a welcoming place for friends and families to gather.
How can visitors plan their visit to maximize their experience at Imago Theatre?
To maximize your group’s experience at Imago Theatre, it’s wise to plan ahead for ticket purchases and arrive in good time to enjoy the pre-show atmosphere. Tickets for popular productions like ZooZoo or A Streetcar Named Desire can sell out quickly, so booking online or by phone well in advance guarantees your group seats together. Arriving early gives you a chance to relax in the lobby, enjoy the complimentary drinks and cookies, and settle into a convivial mood. This time before the performance is ideal for catching up with friends and building anticipation. After the show, the nearby bars and eateries provide excellent options to continue your gathering with dinner or drinks, extending the cultural outing into a full evening event. For families attending children’s shows, positioning your seats near the center aisle is recommended so that kids can enjoy interactive moments when performers engage the audience directly. Finally, checking the theater's schedule and show descriptions beforehand helps ensure you choose a production aligned with your group’s interests. Thoughtful planning ensures your time at Imago Theatre leaves a lasting impression of joy and connection.
