Infatuation is an online site dedicated to talking about great food. In December 2024, they published an article titled "18 of the best Sandwiches in America." On that list was Mum Foods in Austin. They singled out "The Rachel" as one of those 18 best in the U.S.A. Since I live in Austin, going to Mum was an easy decision. The menu is very manageable, with five hand-carved sandwiches featured. The Rachel ($17) is a third-pound smoked pastrami brisket with coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing served on grilled rye bread. Served with a half dill pickle. I really like the size of the sandwich. Generous portion of meat without being overstuffed. I like being able to get a bite from top to bottom of my hand-helds. The pastrami is very tender and flavorful. I spoke to one of the owners, and he said that the other sandwich he would recommend is their "The Original." It is a half-pound of pastrami on rye, served with a deli mustard. (Whole $20 - Half $11. You can add cheese or sauerkraut for an additional $0.50). I found out that also make their own version of a Philly Cheesesteak ($16). I mentioned that I was recently was at R&Bs for one, and he said he loves their too. Mum's version is also served on Amorosa rolls. They also have five different barbequed meats available by the half pound, meat plate, or family style. There are BBQ sandwiches, soups & salads, sides, and specials (see menu picture). Four beers on tap as well as non-alcoholic beverages Mum is located in the Windsor Park area of the city. It shares spaces with the Talisman Coffee Co. Parking is tight but manageable. Service is excellent.

Best Pastrami sandwich I’ve had since visiting New York. Visited on my birthday and they have complimentary cheese cake and root beer as well. Couldn’t have been kinder to us and the sandwich and soup were out of this world. 10/10 one of the best sandwich spots in Austin.

Best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. Blown away by the food and the hospitality. Since it was my first time coming in and the menu was smaller as they were closing up early, Mark hooked me up. I went for The Rachel and was glad I did. The sourdough and meat were perfect, and the slaw + dressing combo took it to the next level. Super moist interior sandwiched between two golden, toasty slices. I'm usually not a slaw guy but I certainly am now. Mark even cut it fresh and delivered it to me personally, literally two minutes after I placed the order. Will be back to try everything else on the menu. Thanks Mark!

only in Austin, can you get the best barbecue/Jewish deli food. Mum foods is top five for me in Austin for barbecue but it’s a little out there off the beaten track so you don’t have the lines like you have everywhere else. ribs are a must sweet and peppery and of course, the pastrami sandwich

When your brisket cheesesteak brings tears to your eyes, but the ribs finish the job and make you weep for joy. TL;DR: Mum Foods in Austin delivers smoked meat magic wrapped in deli genius. Got a killer brisket cheesesteak, then was surprise-gifted a tray of brisket, sausage, and ribs on the house. I’m still emotionally recovering. Seventh stamp collected! BBQ stop number seven on my Texas Monthly top 50 quest led me to the holy grail of hybrid hospitality: Mum Foods Smokehouse & Delicatessen in Austin. This joint doesn’t just serve meat, they compose love letters in smoke and cheese. Rolled in solo a little after high noon. Parking lot was more packed than a Buc-ee’s on Labor Day weekend, but the BBQ gods smiled and a spot opened up. Walked in bracing for a line worthy of brisket royalty, but lo and behold, just a few loyal carnivores ahead of me. The vibe inside? Think upscale butcher meets laid-back lunch counter. Now, I could’ve gone full traditional with a half pound of brisket and a prayer, but I zigged instead of zagged. I locked eyes with the Smoked Brisket Cheesesteak: a toasted hoagie roll stuffed with brisket, molten American cheese, Jimmy pepper relish, and smoked tomato remoulade. One bite and I knew: this sandwich was engineered to ruin me for all other sandwiches. It was meaty. It was cheesy. It was a smoked symphony of perfection. But just as I was polishing off the last glorious corner, fate intervened. Out comes a BBQ angel from behind the counter carrying a tray of smoked dreams: brisket, sausage, and ribs, all on the house. He said I couldn’t come all this way without tasting it all. Sir, whoever you are, you are a brisket blessing in human form. The meat? Unreal. Brisket bark with a peppery crunch, sausage that snapped louder than a gator in spring, and ribs that whispered secrets as they fell off the bone. I boxed the leftovers like they were fine jewels and delivered them home to the Side Dish Queen. She took one bite, nodded approvingly, and declared the holy meat trinity legit. Staff? Phenomenal. Friendly, proud of their craft, and clearly running on passion. The place hums with love for the smoke. Seven joints down, 43 to go. This one’s a must-return. Might need a double stamp next time just for that cheesesteak. I asked the sandwich if it believed in love at first bite. It said, “I brisket all on you.”
