I attended the Sip ‘n Spin class with my husband and, unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to expectations. The class felt rushed from the beginning. For a 2-hour session, I would’ve preferred a much shorter studio tour and a quicker (or even skipped) cleaning period, which alone took about 30 minutes. With such limited time, every minute counts, and I would’ve much rather spent it on the wheel. Frankly, with the lack of hands-on instruction, I think the staff could easily take on some of the cleaning steps like mopping to give participants more time to practice. While I know this is not best practice for those who want to take this on in the long run, I think it’s important to recognize that this is a one time class. The class size was large so the instructor barely checked on us. I think we were only checked in on once. As a first timer, I didn’t feel supported, and with how fast everything moved, there really wasn’t time to recover from mistakes or try again. That was frustrating, especially since the learning curve with pottery is steep. In my opinion, this isn’t a great “sip” experience. Between the pace and needing to constantly use your hands, it felt almost impossible to enjoy a drink. It might work for a casual painting class, but this medium is too involved and class is too short for that kind of relaxed, social vibe.

I started my 10 week class about 6 weeks ago and I am so sad it’s coming to an end soon- Rain City Clay has opened my eyes to a whole new world of expression and has made it accessible to me and others through their scholarship program, I had always wanted to try working with clay but was always scared away by other places because of money. RCC and RCS make art approachable, and thats beautiful. I am taking Sam’s wheel throwing class and he is just amazing, a true wealth of knowledge, so silly, just such a kind human. I feel so comfortable at the studio and am thankful for the environment it offers, also loving Clay Q&A!!!! I am hooked for life 💖

My son (9) and I really enjoyed our class here making luminaries. We had no prior experience and the instructors were very thorough and methodical making it really easy to follow. They also did a great job walking around and being available for questions and help. We'll definitely be signing up for another class!

I took a one-time class. Pro: The opportunity to see if you like working with clay. You can learn with other beginners. Con: No written material, a large class (around 20) plus, very limited time with an instructor available. Conclusion: If you like a more independent exploration this may be for you, but as a person living with autism and adhd it feels really challenging to see any conclusion other than to find another studio. I wanted to like the class so much but I ended up crying in the car feeling defeated and disappointed. I know designing with inclusion in mind is not always intuitive but if all are welcome then classes may need to consider the attention needed for the diversity of learners out there.

Rain City Studio is the most welcoming and inclusive art studio I’ve been engaged with. Each class I’ve taken has had people totally new to pottery, or coming back to it after a long time, as well as people with lots of experience. The instructors are so good at meeting people where they are and giving great support. My skills have grown and I just love the peaceful vibe. Once enrolled you have full access to the studio, glazes and firings. They have great workshops and have just added some youth offering.
