Why REI is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) stands out as the largest professional outdoor retailer in the United States, offering a comprehensive shopping and community experience that makes it an ideal place to meet up with friends and enjoy outdoor lifestyle together. With 181 retail locations across 41 states and a vast product catalog including camping gear, hiking, climbing, cycling, water sports, running, fitness, snow sports, and travel equipment, REI meets diverse outdoor needs. Their physical stores are designed around a large-store concept averaging 25,000 square feet, with about one-third of that space dedicated to experiential public areas. These areas encourage members and visitors to gather, plan adventures, attend educational classes, or simply socialize over coffee. REI also operates under a cooperative model, where customers can become lifetime members, gaining access to exclusive discounts, voting rights, and share ownership of the brand. This focus on community and environmental advocacy sets REI apart from traditional retail stores by promoting outdoor accessibility and sustainability rather than just sales. The store’s collaboration with over 1,000 brands, including prominent names like Adidas, Arc'teryx, and Columbia, ensures quality and variety that satisfy both casual enthusiasts and serious adventurers. Overall, REI combines retail, education, and community engagement, making it more than just a store — it’s an outdoor hub for friends and adventurers alike.

Jeramie and Brad deserve a promotion and a raise. They both were super willing to help me and answer my never-ending trail of questions. They gave me really great advice without any judgment or ulterior motives. I was especially grateful because it’s obvious I’m an amateur in the world of camping. Very genuine, very pleasant, and though I couldn’t decide on a tent today, I will return returning to the store very soon because of these two exceptional staff members.

I drove from Rome City, Indiana to get here. That's about 2hrs 10 minutes. I brought all of the gear that intend to carry on an end-to-end hike, and back on the Sheltowee Trace. About a 750 mile walk with a 40lb+ pack. Even though I had purchased none of the gear I brought at REI, they unpacked my load and repacked it properly. Then they showed me how to properly adjust the Big Agnes 63L Parkview pack that I bought elsewhere to fit me perfectly. I was ready to spend $400 or more to get a pack that worked. In short REI ROCKS!

This is one of my favorite stores to shop for camping gear. They have some really great brands and the employees are so helpful. Every time I have a question they seem very knowledgeable and give me ideas or brands they'd recommend. I've gotten more of my camping supplies here and always come back to stock up before another trip!

Brought in some bikes to get checked out for safety. They were donated for use at the group home where I work. Scott in the bike shop looked at the bikes right away and told me about the things that needed to be fixed for safe riding but didn't try to upsell me on a service we didnt need for lightly used leisure bikes. He was efficient and friendly.
