Why REI is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

REI, or Recreational Equipment, Inc., is much more than a typical outdoor retail store; it stands out as a unique cooperative dedicated to serving its members and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Founded in 1938 by Lloyd and Mary Anderson, REI was established with the vision of making wilderness adventures more accessible through quality gear at affordable prices. This cooperative business model means that by becoming a lifetime member—through a one-time fee of $30—customers gain ownership in the company along with exclusive discounts and the power to vote on board matters, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. REI's stores, sprawling on average around 25,000 square feet, are designed not just for shopping but as vibrant hubs for outdoor planning, education, and social interaction. Around one-third of each store is dedicated to experiential spaces where enthusiasts can attend classes, get expert advice, or simply connect over coffee and stories of adventure. Besides offering a vast range of outdoor gear including clothing, shoes, tents, and equipment from renowned brands such as Adidas, Columbia, The North Face, Black Diamond, and Shimano, REI emphasizes environmental stewardship and community investment. Their commitment to hosting events, supporting nonprofits, and advocating for social and environmental causes resonates deeply with its members, making REI a favored meeting place for friends who share a passion for the outdoors and sustainability.

recently visited the REI store on Fifth Avenue, and it was a fantastic experience! Though smaller than other retail stores I’ve been to, this location is incredibly well-stocked. My family was staying at a hotel and needed a sleeping pad to make a sofa bed more comfortable. It was my first time shopping for a pad, and I initially thought we’d need a sleeping bag. The staff was amazing—despite the store being packed, they were attentive and helpful. One employee spent about five minutes explaining different pad materials and recommended an REI-brand pad that worked perfectly. The store’s location is super convenient, easily accessible by subway. The only downside was the checkout, which took around 10 minutes on a busy weekend due to long lines. That said, the prices were surprisingly lower than REI stores I’ve seen in other cities, which is impressive for Fifth Avenue. This store packed with quality gear, great staff, and excellent prices. Highly recommend for anyone in NYC needing outdoor equipment!

I usually order from REI's online store. This time I was on a business trip to Manhattan and near SOHO. I had some free time, so I came to visit it. I have not been to other REI branches. But I think the space in this store is very large. There are stairs connecting floors. There are many kinds of products. You can try them on and confirm whether the functions of the products are as expected. This is something you can't experience when shopping online. There is a toilet (women's toilet) on the basement floor. The men's toilet cannot be used.

It is truly one of those grand shops that one longs for—especially as it has no presence in London. Upon researching the store, I discovered that it offers membership discounts, annual dividend returns, high-quality outdoor gear, complimentary repair and rental services, environmentally conscious operations, and notably attentive customer care. Though I’ve yet to experience these benefits firsthand, I’ve recently found myself drawn to the world of camping gear—so much in vogue these days—as well as ski equipment and bicycles, all of which are scarcely available in London. The staff appeared courteous, and I found myself pondering what I might take home on my next visit; simply browsing was a pleasure in itself. Given the selection of fitness equipment and clever essentials that so suit the modern lifestyle, I shall certainly make better use of their website in the meantime.

Came back to this REI with my girlfriend after a few years I remembered really liking it, and it’s still a solid spot. The store is super spacious and spread over multiple levels, with a huge range of gear for camping, biking, running, hiking pretty much anything sporty or outdoorsy. They carry a great selection of quality brands like The North Face, Cannondale, Sportina, and more. That said, the prices are very high. Maybe it’s the New York factor, but everything felt noticeably more expensive than what you’d find online or in other stores. I didn’t find anything particularly exciting this time, but if you need good gear and want to see it in person, this is a reliable place to go. Just be prepared to pay a premium for the convenience and selection.

My first time bringing my track bike to REI and I was lucky to get Knox! What a chill, respectful bike tech. He looked at the schedule for today and still was able to squeeze me in the que. He assessed my bike, tightened and oiled my chain and tightened my brake cable. He is cool and manages his customers, even when busy, with calm and empathetic communication! Highly suggest Knox at REI

Why is REI perfect for groups looking to meet up? One key reason REI stands out as a meetup spot is its strong community vibe backed by knowledgeable, approachable staff who genuinely care about customers’ outdoor experiences. With locations like the SoHo flagship store boasting expansive, three-level layouts, the atmosphere is spacious and accommodating for groups to spread out, explore gear, and chat with staff without feeling rushed or cramped. The stores are outfitted with varied sections, from camping and climbing to fitness and cycling, so everyone in your group finds something engaging. Convenience is another factor — many REI stores, including those in Carle Place, Huntington Station, and SoHo, offer services like curbside pickup and buy-online-pickup-in-store, eliminating hassle for group purchases. Plus, the option to trade in or buy used gear allows your group to be eco-conscious and budget-friendly. REI’s dedication to education also means your gathering isn’t just social; it’s enriching and energizing for everyone's outdoor lifestyle, making it a favorite destination for groups who want to combine shopping, learning, and planning in one go.

How does REI support outdoor adventures beyond the store? REI’s commitment extends far beyond selling outdoor gear; it’s about empowering people to get outside confidently and safely. These organized events provide an excellent way for friends and family to bond in nature with expert leadership and safety oversight. Beyond activities, REI’s expert advice and community resources help groups plan longer excursions, ensuring everyone is prepared — from first-timers to seasoned explorers. The co-op model also means your participation supports environmental stewardship and sustainable outdoor initiatives, allowing your group to contribute positively to the places you adventure in. Unlike typical retailers, REI exists to serve its members and the broader outdoor community, offering dividends based on purchases and investing heavily in outdoor stewardship programs. This focus creates a stronger sense of belonging and shared values, which is especially attractive for groups seeking more than just a shopping trip. REI’s commitment to environmental responsibility can resonate with groups passionate about leaving minimal impact in the wild. The extensive array of hands-on classes and events specifically designed for beginners and experienced adventurers alike fosters learning together — a hallmark that distinguishes it from competitors that largely offer just products. Furthermore, REI’s emphasis on quality equipment paired with customer service ensures you and your friends are not only connecting but doing so with the best tools and expert knowledge available, which elevates the overall experience profoundly.

Why should families consider REI for group gatherings? REI is ideal for families because it offers activities and gear that accommodate all ages and skill levels, ensuring everyone from kids to grandparents finds something enjoyable. For family reunions or casual meetups, REI provides a safe, educational, and interactive environment that can spark ideas for future family trips and collective outdoor memories. The cooperative’s emphasis on quality and sustainability also means families can invest in products designed to last, promoting responsible outdoor lifestyles they can pass down. Together, these features make REI a trusted and enriching place for families to convene, learn, and plan adventures.

How does REI help groups plan their next adventures? REI acts as a comprehensive adventure planning hub for groups by providing not only the gear but also expert advice, detailed trip planning resources, and skill-building opportunities under one roof. The in-store experts can help tailor recommendations based on the type of trip, group size, and skill levels, ensuring everyone is prepared and excited. Additionally, REI’s events and workshops often include sessions on trip planning topics like navigation, wilderness first aid, and camp cooking, empowering groups to handle challenges proactively. Access to rental gear also reduces investment risk for groups trying new activities.
