Why The Den Theatre is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family

The Den Theatre, situated in Chicago's vibrant Wicker Park neighborhood, stands out as a unique and historic venue that has evolved into one of the city's most dynamic spaces for live theater, comedy, and music. Founded in 2010 by Ryan Martin, a former actor motivated to create a community-focused performance space, The Den began as a modest single-room theater on the building's second floor. Since then, it has expanded to encompass a 30,000 square foot facility with seven live performance spaces, three bars, and multiple adjacent spaces, making it one of the largest and most versatile live venues in the country. The building’s rich history, dating back to the late 19th century, blends with a modern approach to entertainment and community engagement. The Den offers an intimate 'black box' theater experience enhanced by a continuous vision of growth, including master-planned renovations to improve accessibility, facades, and communal spaces, transforming circulation areas into vibrant "Main Street" style environments that invite socialization and cultural immersion. Visitors enjoy an eclectic mix of comedy shows, theater productions, and music acts, all set within a welcoming atmosphere that encourages gathering with friends. The inclusion of several bars and planned new restaurants further enriches the social and entertainment experience. Whether attending a cutting-edge play, a comedy show, or simply enjoying drinks with friends, The Den Theatre provides a compelling destination that captures Chicago’s artistic spirit and community pulse.

We visited The Den Theatre to see Melissa Villaseñor, and the show was fantastic! The space itself is great… there truly isn’t a bad seat in the house. One thing to note: the two-drink minimum only applies after you enter the theater. Any drinks purchased beforehand don’t count, which they let you know after you’ve already made your pre-show purchase while waiting for the doors to open. That said, the wait staff was very attentive, and overall it was a great experience.

This event kicked off my Summer 2025. I was introduced to The Anatomy of Murder family by an extended family member about a year ago and have been hooked ever since. When the team announced that they would be coming to Chicago I was overjoyed to be able to attend the event. I had an amazing time and look forward to attending future events. This was my first time ever visiting The Den and the staff was courteous, and polite. I even took pictures with Anna and Scott.

We'd been to the Heath Main Stage Theater at the Den Theatre a few times before we realized that there are actually 7 different performance venues. It's actually a multi-level. Live entertainment performance venue that offers plays, stand up comedy, music and more. When you walk in, you are greeted by the elegantly decorated lobby and bar area where you can relax either before or after your performance. If you want to experience live entertainment with local stars to national names, the Den Theatre is for you! Be warned! It's in Wicker Park and only street parking is available (if you can find it).

Great theatre. Deceptive ticketing. Say (as I did) you want 4 GA tickets for a show. They're listed at $34.50 each. But there's a $6 "fee" with each ticket. You'd rather spend that $24 on cocktails, so you go to the box office (only open Thu-Fri noon-4pm) and -- once you bang on the locked door and they let you in -- the kind lady says the $6 "fee" still applies! So in truth there is no way to buy a $34.50 ticket. Your only choice via any channel is to buy a $40.50 ticket. Plus tax. This is deceptive, plain and simple. I love their shows, but I hate this lying about ticket prices. Why? Please fix it, Den!

I recently attended a Chamber of Commerce event at The Den Theatre, and I was thoroughly impressed. The space is absolutely stunning, beautifully designed with a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was exceptionally clean and well-maintained, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and the overall vibe of the venue was both fun and professional. It’s a fantastic place for events, and I’m looking forward to return.
