I'm writing to highly recommend Home Comedy Theater for improv courses and workshops. I had never done improve before taking classes, but was in a Level One course with other classmates who had years of improv experience. They had signed-up for Level One here because of the reputation of the instructors - that should tell you a lot about the teachers and classes here. Teachers at Home Comedy Theater are skilled (most have literal decades of experience), are encouraging, and are capable of handling classes where students have a range of experience levels. For me, they also emphasize the artistic and relationship-building aspects of improv rather than emphasizing ways to get quick laughs. I like that. If you want to learn more about improv and be around people who care about it as an art form, Home Comedy Theater is a great place to be.

Hands down the best theater I have taken classes at in Chicago . This is about community and ensemble building for the love of improv art form not to be the next SNL star . The teaching in this institution is truly legendary status . Every single person at this institution who is a teacher has been performing for over 20 plus years. You are challenged to truly be the best you can be . Learning from the people who were essential to the improv movement is truly an honor . I can’t thank Cesar , Jerry, Sonny , Peter , Liz , Jorin , Paul , TJ , Mike , Tracey enough! Thanks for allowing me to be apart of the Home Theater! 😊

I love the Home theater for many reasons. I’ll share two here. The first reason is the Home Theater has access to a deep well of institutional Improv knowledge. When the Pandemic hit, teachers from every comedy theater across Chicago retired or left for LA. Many were unable to hand down or get shadowed by upcoming teachers: valuable information on the styles, techniques, and other things essential to each theater’s aesthetic left with them. The home has access to this well. Many of the Home Theater’s teachers directly studied with Del* then came up and improvised alongside beloved comedy legends and pioneers of the art form. They’ve been performing and teaching since the 90’s and there’s a lived knowledge/information there that can’t easily be replicated. What does that look like in the classroom? I play piano. Pianists begin playing major scales at 5 years old and continue learning nuances about major scales, this very “beginner” thing until they’re dead. As a Home theater student, it was SO, SO satisfying for teachers to share and break down “Yes And” or "the Harold" and present the myriad of possibilities inside these concepts and forms: how they manifest, how they interact, when and WHY to break them. Side coaching and essential parts of Harold training** began as early as level 1 and we even got to hear cool stories, without y'know, the teacher letting the time get away from them. The second reason I love the home is their big push for capital C Community. I know the training center and administrative staff are doing their best to really push that vibe, whether it be in how they behave or how they collaborate with other organizations around town. Heck, the building's layout was purposely designed to be as conducive to community building as possible. The Main bar is IN the Mainstage. After your show, when your team goes to the bar to relax, you WILL end up watching other people’s shows. You will watch their shows, enjoy their work………. then they will join YOU at the bar where you will all talk and laugh while watching the next show****: a seamless blending of the old school and the new school over Martinis and Old Styles Beers.***** No inadvertent hierarchies here and that’s Mrs Spolin****** wanted it to be. * (good artist/teacher, probably needed therapy) ** (Stage Pictures! Supportive Mirroring! DOOOO IT!) *** (of which I had many cause I’m a fuggin nerd) ***** (over being sentient alarm clocks that love to argue at Second CIty Generals) ***** (You don’t realize how important architecture is until you temp at an architectural firm) ****** (Basicallly the mom of improv who thought education was best done in egalitarian environments)

I took the full training program here, and I enjoyed every second of it as I got to learn Chicago-style longform improv from a staff of legendary instructors. The Home has a beautiful theater space, perfect for either watching shows or being in one yourself. (I recommend doing both!)
