Cute little cat sanctuary on Roosevelt Island! Not many cats out today but it's understandable because it's pretty hot out today. The park is really relaxing and quiet and has a great view of the water. Great place for a relaxing walk and outing.

The Wildlife Freedom Foundation is a wonderful organization. Since I’ve moved to Roosevelt Island, I’ve seen the great work that they do. They help rehabilitate many forms of wildlife, and they’ve helped find homes for so many cats. They’re also an important part of the community: educating people about protecting and preserving wildlife as well as hosting community events. Visiting the sanctuary is always great. You can admire all of the animals (cats, geese, squirrels, opossums, etc) living in harmony together. They have a very important mission and I’m happy they are able to share their work with our community.

I have lived on the island for 10 years and have volunteered with the Wildlife Freedom Foundation (WFF) for almost as much time. I have had the pleasure of helping WFF rehabilitate and care for countless animals including geese, opossums, squirrels, ducks, swans, and of course cats! The sanctuaries can be found around Roosevelt Island and have greatly improved the lives of residents and and wildlife. WFF works with the ACC of NYC, the kill shelter of the city, to take in formerly owned and rescued cats and save them from being put down. WFF not only acts as a custodian of these cats but does so much more work with the wildlife of the island. The Southpoint Park Sanctuary serves as a home for a variety of animals (cats, geese, ducks, opossums, swans, squirrels) that are year long residents of the island and find refuge at the sanctuary. Been volunteering there for 4+ months and had the most amazing time. Rossana, the founder of WFF is one of the most caring people I met. She remembered the name of every cat, goose, and squirrel that she rescued in the shelter. The animals are cared for by multiple volunteers on a daily basis.

I appreciate what they do for birds but I do doubt the idea with cats. If cats were considered wildlife, why are they fed on a regular basis and pet by feeders? If cats were considered domesticated, why are they allowed to be outside houses or fences? Unlike some birds in sanctuary, most cats are healthy and don't need delicate care. Cats naturally hunt birds for fun, even though not necessarily for prey. A lot of birds/squirrels are spotted killed by cats. Keeping cats in this way contradicts what they claim to maintain wildlife. Update: Seeing some new reviews, the volunteers and owner avoid mentioning any actions they take to stop cats from approaching birds, squirrels and other wildlife.
