Why YWCA Cambridge is a fun option when searching for things to do near me with friends and family
YWCA Cambridge stands as a historic and vital community institution dedicated to empowering women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals through comprehensive social services, affordable housing, and advocacy. Established in 1892, the organization has a long legacy of responding to the needs of women, particularly during periods of social and economic upheaval such as the Industrial Revolution. Initially providing safe boarding houses and essential life skills training for young factory workers, YWCA Cambridge has evolved to offer a range of responsive programs including child care, employment skills training, gender-based violence prevention, and homeless family shelter services. The organization prioritizes participant-led and adaptive programming to ensure inclusiveness and empowerment for those it serves. It operates 103 Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing units for single women and a shelter accommodating up to 10 homeless families, making it Cambridge’s largest residential housing provider for women. The YWCA maintains a focus on advancing gender equity, eliminating racism, and promoting social justice, peace, freedom, and dignity through its community outreach and advocacy efforts. Donations and community support fund much of their work, enabling the YWCA to constantly adapt and meet the changing needs of the local community. This blend of historic significance, extensive supportive housing, and proactive, innovative programming makes YWCA Cambridge an important and welcoming place for women and allies to connect and find support.

If I could give this place a zero star, I would. All those other reviews are BS. This is a SRO ( single room ) kitchen bathrooms and everything else is SHARED managed by CHA but it is not housing… this is supposed to be a woman empowerment and a steppingstone to getting housing. But there is no woman empowerment here we have women putting other women in comas. We have women setting other women rooms on fire. Throwing dogs out of windows for all to see. We have women dying in their room month after month being left in there for weeks, leaving us to smell decomposing bodies as we walked through the hallway & flys filling up in your room or around your room, and you sit and watch as they remove them as if it was a piece of trash. & management telling you “ well people come here for last resort, but there are donuts and coffee For you and try to get it out of your mind “ Let’s not talk about the drug users & overdoses. Management is unless and doesn’t help you in any way, all they want is your money. There is no resources for you. They get you in here and they trap you. Let’s not forget all the rodents, rats spiders and bedbugs, etc. there is cases of MRSA in the building and seeing how everything is shared, just imagine that. We have unstable women who live here, that clogged up the tubs and toilets so now you’re waking up to your room being flooded things destroyed and all they say is, we will mop it up. Let’s not forget that woman who are unstable will throw their feces at other women’s doors or in the bathroom sinks, even the kitchen. They sell you a dream when you come here and the most important part is you will never be safe here. Security Staff members threaten you, the tenants abuse you, the maintenance cleanup crew are also turning trick with tenants and management does nothing about it. Security staff have to let you in the building and without them you can’t get in, most of the time they missing from the front desk or Sleep, so you will be stuck outside. They let people into the building who also don’t live here which is a big safety concern. Not to mention. . Security starting mess with tenants, leaving us to fight with one another. While they get to go to home peacefully, we're left at war. You can't cook like you want to, which leads to bad (non) eating habits. Not to mention the amount of money u spend on takeout because u still have to survive. Tenants have been here for years, yet we don't receive outside mail. How strange is that. I don't trust being in this building anymore. If they can cover up homicides, what else is possible?! It's no peace whatsoever. 24/7 u hear screaming, doors slamming and people yelling outside our windows. Help the people who are helping their selves. Everyone doesn't want to sit around here for 5, 10 or even 20 years. Walking out of your building and seeing drug users right outside, or seeing someone laying flat on their face overdosing. I’m not just speaking for me. I’m speaking for woman who don’t have a backbone of their own. There are some elderly women who don’t belong here, blind handicapped, incapable of taking care of their self , & the list goes on. There are a few young women, some even older who works hard every day but because their mental is crashing, it’s becoming hard for them to do what they normally do like going to work. There are women in here who are trying their hardest to move out get a voucher and continue on with life but Since moving in this building, some have lost their job became depressed. Take medication day-to-day just to make it through. Do not move into this place if you have ANY other option . You will lose your sanity. You can’t have company at all, and it’s not family oriented . Your children can’t come see you neither. Even when you complain, it gets swept under the rug you get no help. It’s so bad to the point where myself and a few other people went to the mayors office to try and get some type of help in anyway long story short this whole place needs to be shut down.

How do we train women for the future? How do we create safe inclusive spaces? How do we grow the future and stop being confused with the Y MC A? How do we protect and serve the City of Cambridge without compromising our goals? We don't. Not without the dedicated unstoppable unrewarded but rewarded women who tirelessly put in the work. Close to city Hall just off Mass Ave. Talks, art, resources, and just one of the best spots in the city forever.

Went for an Open House. A bit upset because i brought my child with me, did the tour, was told about family units, (as the are an SRO Building) when i come back down, im told no children allowed. Only one person per room. They are Subsidized through CHA. You have your own room, but you share a kitchen and bathroom. The bathroom is multi-stall and multi-shower. Its fine if its just you and you dont mind alot of space.

Better than living on the streets. Better than shelter life. Clean. Secure. All variety of personalities as neighbors. Staff is sweet, helpful and professional. Elevator sucks!

I think it's a great place for women you know to gather and talk amongst each other and it's very probably therapeutic
