Nice place to see a featured variety of trees with greenery within Elysian Park, apart from the urban landscape that surrounds it! Although unlike other designated arboretums, I was disappointed with the lack of signage identifying the various trees. The restrooms needed servicing before using at mid-day, as the condition was hideous. The playground was good with a perimeter fence to keep the kiddies together. I had to map out the location before arriving, otherwise the directions were vague on the correct parking lot to arrive at, if not the general Elysian Park parking with a walkover.

A beautiful green public space for families and friends to gather and relax and potentially hit the local trails for great views of Los Angeles

BEWARE BATHROOMS ARE NASTY!!!!!! This park would be pretty awesome if it weren't for the horrendous state of the bathrooms. Because of LA's obsession with stopping homeless people from having a clean bathroom they do the bare minimum as far as cleanliness etc. Everyone needs to use it. The city is more concerned with keeping them dirty to discourage homeless people from using them then they are keeping them clean and nice for the regular users of the park. Bathrooms are dark and dirty. I wouldn't want my dog to use it! Horrible. If it weren't for the bathrooms I would give this park 4 stars.

Bathrooms are horrible...plenty of open space to run around. Pretty setting.

Web site is under "Chavez Ravine Arboretum". There are supposedly over 130 varieties of trees, and the web site has a pdf map of them.

What makes the arboretum’s botanical collection unique and worth exploring?
The botanical collection at the Elysian Park Arboretum holds a historic and scientific significance that makes it an exceptional destination for visitors. Established in 1893 by the Los Angeles Horticultural Society, it is one of Southern California’s oldest arboretums, curated with a vision to showcase rare and exotic tree species from across the globe. This vision has resulted in a living museum with over 100 varieties of trees, including some considered the oldest and largest of their kinds in the country, such as the Cape Chestnut, Kauri, and Tipu trees.
Unlike modern botanical gardens that often focus on aesthetic displays, Elysian Park Arboretum reflects historical forestry education and conservation goals, preserving specimens planted by dedicated volunteers over more than a century. Each tree has a story and environmental significance, making walks through the arboretum both enlightening and inspiring.
Additionally, the arboretum’s climate and terrain provide an ideal habitat that allows these diverse species — originally from vastly different continents — to thrive side by side. This botanical juxtaposition serves as an educational resource for students, botanists, and curious visitors, fostering a deeper understanding of plant adaptations and global ecology.
