I recently got my open water dive certification through this shop. I met someone in the San Diego diving world and asked for a shop recommendation and they said "go to San Diego Divers, they are hands down the best in the area." Julie was my instructor, and Lonnie helped get me set up. They were both fantastic. They have a very deep knowledge of both scuba diving and the ocean in general. They prioritized safety throughout the entire class. Saw many other groups of divers at the beach, but ours was the smallest (4 students) and made me feel safe. Cannot imagine going out there with 10+ other students. Julie is a wonderful teacher and as a bonus is very kind and patient; she is the kind of person you want to learn these skills from. They transported all of our rental equipment to the beach and were well prepared with backups of all kinds of gear. I purchased a mask, fins, and booties at the shop and they provided a discount as I was in the class. They're a busy shop so if you want to secure a spot in class I recommend calling or going in person to talk to them as opposed to emailing. It is so worth it!

Got to talk to Malcolm again today when I dropped some tanks off to get hydro & viz. I got my Divemaster in 1989, and every time I talk with him it reminds me of talking to my dad when I was a kid. He's forgotten more than I'll ever learn. I don't think he'll ever win a Mr. Congeniality award for his work at the shop, but if he was a college professor, he'd be the type that the kids respected, and whose classes were always packed with a waiting list. If you want the best answer that maybe you don't like, this is where you go. You want glitz and glamor, bright colors and balloons, there's other dive shops you can go to, but they're not all that.
