Words cannot explain how amazing this experience was. It was everything you can dream of and more. I don’t believe there’s any other place where you can actually participate in a dogfight WWI style. The pilots were great! Hog was amazing and walked me through everything I needed to know, and helped guide me through the dog fights as I controlled the plane. Not to mention the absolutely beautiful view of San Diego from an open cockpit on a beautiful sunny day. Flying through the bay and seeing aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines was really cool! At one point, we pulled 3 1/2 G’s, doing loop da loops and barrel rolls. This was a great gift for Father’s Day from my wife. Such an amazing experience and well worth the money! Highly recommend this once in a lifetime experience!

Amazing experience! Went up for my birthday this year and it was everything as advertised. My pilot Vinny was very kind and explained everything before we left the ground and made sure I was comfortable every step of the process before takeoff. The other pilot Tiller was also very nice and kind and very skilled and he came in just to fly with us to give me the dog fight experience even though he didn't have another passenger in his plane. 10/10 would recommend!

One of the coolest things you can do in San Diego! Pilot Scott was a true pro and made the whole experience feel very safe. It’s intimidating at first but once you get up in the air it feels incredibly safe and you wish the experience went on all day. Absolutely recommend late afternoon time when you can see the sun start to get lower and to wear a heavy jacket or sweatshirt since it gets cold and windy. 100% would do again. Thank you Sky Tours and Scott!

Earl and the San Diego Sky Tours team, I just wanted to say a big thanks for an absolutely incredible flight! Earl the Pearl….,you were the best – seriously, such a friendly, funny, and awesome dude. I can't believe I got to actually fly the plane and even pull off some of the stunts myself! Forget rollercoasters, this was on a whole other level of amazing. It was the most thrilling, unforgettable experience ever! Thanks again for everything.

Loved, loved, loved it! We went for my son's 14th birthday and did the air combat tour. Our pilots Dan and D-man (Damon) were great! They walked us through the whole experience before we got in the planes and then flew us out to where we could fly the planes ourselves (neither of us had any experience). It was incredible!! An experience like none other that we will never forget. Thank you Dan and D-Man : )

What makes the pilot team and company background special?
San Diego Sky Tours is more than just an aerial tour provider; it is a veteran-run company founded on a deep passion for aviation and a commitment to excellence. Its leadership includes former military aviators who bring decades of aviation experience ranging from military flight careers to commercial and instructional expertise. This pedigree means guests fly with highly skilled pilots who understand both the technical and experiential aspects of flying.
The company began in 2009 as a college business project turned dream to showcase San Diego from the sky. Founders James “Cap” Kapenas (USMC) and Ryan “P Diddy” Poortinga (USAF), along with creative insights from Erich “Fox” Moulder (USN), started with a single Cessna and expanded to a diverse fleet including vintage biplanes that enable an array of tour options. This veteran foundation imbues the experience with authenticity and a mission to share not just rides but an inspiring aviation story, enhancing the flight’s meaningfulness.
Pilots are FAA-certified flight instructors, adhere strictly to safety protocols, and participate in ongoing training including drug testing. Their professionalism ensures a safe environment and enables them to provide engaging educational commentary during flights. The team's military backgrounds also allow the company to offer unique experiences like formation flying — something very few commercial operators can boast — granting group visitors a rare opportunity to see precision flying firsthand.

For larger groups or families, their multi-passenger aircraft can carry up to five guests, ensuring the entire crew can fly together comfortably while enjoying expansive views. For smaller meetups or pairs, single-passenger biplanes offer direct, intimate flying experiences. Minimum age requirements are modest, allowing children as young as nine to participate, while weight restrictions are reasonable and clearly communicated in advance for safety.
The company encourages customization to fit your group’s schedule whether it’s a quick scenic flight or a longer immersive adventure. Tours can happen at convenient times, with afternoon flights generally favored to avoid coastal clouds and maximize visibility. The staff is accommodating in scheduling and tailoring flights, making it easy to organize around tight itineraries or special celebrations.

The unique environment merges fun, education, and unforgettable memories — perfect for marking important moments with something truly out of the ordinary.
