I can't recommend this studio enough! The coiled sculpture course was a perfect balance of technical instruction, demos and also learning about the artistic process and creative exploration. Josh is a wonderful instructor who took the time to work with each student one-on-one to discuss their work and help them progress towards their goal. I was really unsure of myself at the beginning but Josh helped me through that and I finished the course with a sculpture I absolutely love. Everyone I met here has been super welcoming. The studio just seems to have this special energy that fosters creativity, community and fun!

Stepping into Tao of Clay is like entering a meticulously curated sanctuary where craftsmanship meets quiet contemplation. My month long membership was the perfect summer getaway before grad school, if you’re into all things clay and in the San Diego region I encourage you to take a studio tour.

I've been hesitant to write this review because I didn't know how to put into words the place that tao of clay is. Don't let this place fool you, it's not really a pottery studio, it is more like a whole world within a time capsule. You will enter and leave after hours thinking you've only spent one hour inside. Time bends here, because of the flow you enter. You will find a community of people genuinely dedicated to deepening their craft and their relationship with clay. I’ve been a member here since March and have taken both the Intro to Throwing and Organicity classes. If you’re thinking about becoming a member: The clay is infinite. You can flop a pot, grab more clay, and try again. Only fired pieces count toward your monthly 25 lb limit, which is honestly a lot. The hours are generous, the light is meditative, and the space is living and breathing. I haven’t met a single person here who isn’t kind. The people this place attracts are the real ones. They also have the best snacks. Intro to Throwing was a grounding experience. I was intimidated by the wheel for years, this class gently pushed me to face that fear. You're offered alot of practice hours outside of class, and with all the in-house clay available, there’s freedom to experiment. Learning to center clay became a metaphor for life, my whole being started to search for her center before I could begin to create anything. The class blends technique, mindfulness, and embodiment in a way that sticks with you long after you leave. Then there’s the organicity class. It’s about letting go of the plan in your mind and allowing your body to guide your hands. You follow the clay, and somehow, the clay begins to speak back. I let go of many internal walls in that class. I left more free, more grounded, and a little more myself. Josh is a philosopher, poet and cat lover who just so happens to also be a potter who owns the space. His values such as organicity and unity are what tao of clay represents and this is what he embodies. He walks the talk and I am so thankful he created this place. Ava is an incredible curator of the space, an observant teacher and the brilliant curator of snacks. So thank you to tao of clay. This place reminds me of who I am when I forget. I almost forgot about Lao. You’ll find out when you get here.

100/5 stars!! Take this class! I had an amazing experience at this pottery studio. Josh is a fantastic and inspiring teacher who not only teaches the art of pottery but also shares lessons that apply to real life. I have learned so much in this fun and supportive environment. The community is truly awesome I’ve made so many friends here. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, this class is a must—great people, great vibes, and a great way to get creative! I look forward to taking next class!

I've taken two courses here and am now a member and I absolutely love it! Top notch studio, great environment, Josh is an incredible instructor. I also really appreciate how mindfulness is a part of the classes and culture. There's a real focus on being present, connecting with the clay, and enjoying the process—not just the end result. Oh also the studio cat is sooo cute. Highly recommend!
