I had been exploring parasailing agencies and happened to see that Parasailing San Diego was offering Wild Ocean Safari tours. Something about this agency really called to me, so when we returned to San Diego this month we made it a point to get scheduled with them. Because this is a newer experience they offer, scheduling for less than three people can be difficult, understandably due to cost of labor, fuel, etc. The two of us decided to pay for a third seat and it was SO worth it. This is a BEAUTIFUL vessel. We’ve done larger whale watching tours (which we got horribly seasick on, couldn’t hear anything over the speakers, and were so far from the wildlife that it wasn’t worth it) and did another small vessel whale watching tour with a different company just a few days prior to this. This was so different from both of those experiences. This is by far the nicest vessel we’ve been on. It was clean, comfortable, and even though we’re pretty low-maintenance people, we were made to feel so luxurious! We took some Dramamine as a precaution and probably didn’t need to. This vessel just cut right through the water and handled huge swells like a boss. Great speed and agility— I had no concerns for the ability of our captain or the vessel. Super notable is that this tour actually covered more water than any we’ve been on before. This changed the landscape of the water a little bit and felt more private as we drove further from the other whale watching experiences. Really cool! Our captain was a fantastic, energetic, former marine biologist and as a marine mammal enthusiast, I was a puddle in her knowledge. She was so much fun, charismatic, and actually, kind of a badass. She knew exactly what she was looking for, frequented the radio to maintain communication with other companies, and was very knowledgeable about underwater topography of the area. Her first mate was equally great and very considerate, attentive to the waterscape, and so nice. They made us excited to be with them and it felt more like friends hanging out than a stuffy business transaction.I feel it’s also notable to say that the captain also called in for a sea lion that needed medical attention. This mattered a great deal to me and left an impression. We saw a mega pod (maybe 500 or so!) of Common Dolphin and watched them feeding and playing. We missed the whales this trip, but it’s sort of in between seasons as the Blues move south and the Humpbacks are incoming. I have no doubt that if it were a couple weeks before or after our trip, we’d have seen some. For those who need handicap accommodations this boat is very accessible. There is plenty to hold on to when boarding and assistance was offered if we’d needed it. There is one step down into the vessel (or up if you’re off-boarding) of maybe 12-14” and seating at the front and behind the captain’s chair. The rear seating is bench-like while the front seating is more of a lounge. For larger people, rear seating may be more accessible only due to the small walkway between the side of the boat and the canopy that covers the captain’s seat. No weight limit, so all body sizes were clearly welcomed! There are photos on their website that accurately depict the layout of the vessel, which may help to relieve some anxiety. The parking lot is also very accessible, with adequate space. The walkway is paved up until you get to the gate where you access the dock. There is a metal ramp with traction at a somewhat steep incline, but only about 20-25’ long (I believe there were rails on either side, but I’m not positive anymore!) before stepping onto the dock. The vessel is parked at the first spot, so there are only a few steps to where you onboard from the wooden dock. Make sure you bring a jacket, water, a hat that has a good way to tighten to your head, and sunscreen- and don’t forget to reapply. The sun out on the ocean is often so deceiving with the cool breeze. We will 100% be back out with Wild Ocean Safari. This was by far the most enjoyable ocean tour we’ve been on. Highly recommend!
